It has a population of 25,000,[2] mainly from Iraq's Sunni Turkoman ethnic group.[3] Yankjah, along with Altun Kupri, Amerli, Bashir, Bustamli, Mahalabiyah, Qarah Tappah, Sulaiman Bek, Tal Afar, Taza Khurmatu, and Tuz Khormato, make up the largest Turkmen-majority cities in Iraq, while Mosul, Kirkuk, Kifri, Daquq, Muqdadiyah, Jalawla, and Al-Sadiyah have significant Turkmen minority populations.
