Garalov is a member of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party and has held his present office for 11 years. He formerly served as the chief prosecutor in Ganja. He is related to influential party official and longtime MP Zahid Garalov.[2] Prosecutor General of AzerbaijanIn 2005, Garalov raised eyebrows when he accused the parliamentary opposition of collusion with Armenia and warned that Armenian-backed government opponents were plotting a revolution against President Ilham Aliyev's government.[3] In his capacity as prosecutor general, Garalov defended the arrest of journalist Eynulla Fatullayev in 2007, alleging that his website threatened state-sponsored terrorism by Iran against Azerbaijani government buildings. He claimed that Fatullayev's detention and imprisonment should not be taken as signs that Azerbaijan does not uphold freedom of the press.[4] Garalov benefited under a 2009 law that lifted restrictions on how many terms a prosecutor general could serve, as he was reappointed and confirmed to his current position in 2010, less than a year later.[1][5] In 2011, Garalov said that his office would take action against government officials suspected of corruption and bribery. "In order to require the same attitudes from others and have the moral rights for investigation [of] corrupt officials' activity, we must start fighting against corruption from ourselves," he added, criticizing the "luxurious lifestyle" of some Azerbaijanis as evidence of corruption.[6] After the outbreak of the 2011 protests against the Azerbaijani government, Garalov vowed to "suppress" the demonstrations and said that the experience of "other countries", presumably a reference to Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia, would not be repeated in Azerbaijan.[7] Ahead of a planned protest in mid-April, Garalov accused opposition leaders Ali Karimli and Isa Gambar with acting on orders from foreign governments and summoned both leaders for interrogation, after which they were released.[8] References1. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://abc.az/eng/news/44530.html|agency=ABC.az|date=27 April 2010|accessdate=26 April 2011|title=Azerbaijani MPs agreed on appointment of Zakir Garalov prosecutor general for third term}} {{Arab Spring}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Garalov, Zakir}}{{Azerbaijan-politician-stub}}{{Azerbaijan-bio-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.rferl.org/content/Azerbaijani_ProsecutorGeneral_Gets_Third_Term/2026235.html|agency=Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty|date=27 April 2010|accessdate=26 April 2011|title=Azerbaijani Prosecutor-General Gets Third Term}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.panarmenian.net/eng/world/news/14417/|date=8 August 2005|accessdate=26 April 2011|title=ZAKIR GARALOV CONVINCED AZERI OPPOSITION COLLABORATES WITH RA SECRET SERVICE}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://en.apa.az/print.php?id=27569|agency=Azeri Press Agency|date=31 May 2007|accessdate=26 April 2011|title=Azerbaijani Prosecutor General comments on Eynulla Fetullayev’s case}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://hrc.az/eng/news/laws/1583-zakir-garalov-reacts-to-amendment-about.html|agency=Public Council on Human Rights|date=1 October 2009|accessdate=26 April 2011|title=Zakir Garalov reacts to amendment about lifting of restriction on prosecutor general’s term}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://en.apa.az/news.php?id=139959|agency=Azeri Press Agency|date=5 February 2011|accessdate=26 April 2011|title=Zakir Garalov: "We must start fighting against corruption from ourselves"}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/azerbaijan-stop-targeting-peaceful-protesters-2011-04-15|agency=Amnesty International|title=Azerbaijan urged to stop targeting peaceful protesters|date=15 April 2011|accessdate=24 April 2011}} 8. ^{{cite news|url=http://azerireport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2721&Itemid=42|agency=Azeri Report|title=Ali Karimli Interrogated For 8 Hours!|date=16 April 2011|accessdate=26 April 2011}} 5 : 1956 births|Living people|People from Dmanisi|New Azerbaijan Party politicians|Attorneys general |
