The election was triggered by the assassination of mayor Carter Harrison Sr. (a Democrat that had been elected to his fifth non-consecutive term earlier that year). Following Harrison's death, Republican George Bell Swift had been appointed by City Council to serve as mayor until the special election could be held. In the election, which was held December 19,[1][1] Hopkins narrowly defeated Swift by a half-percent margin. Hopkins became Chicago's first Irish-American mayor.[2] The election was held amid a nationwide economic depression.[3] Results{{Election box begin no change| title=1893 Chicago mayoral special election[4][5]}}{{Election box winning candidate with party link no change|party = Democratic Party (United States) |candidate = John Patrick Hopkins |votes = 112,959 |percentage = 49.71 }}{{Election box candidate with party link no change |party = Republican Party (United States) |candidate = George Bell Swift (incumbent) |votes = 111,660 |percentage = 49.14 }}{{Election box candidate with party link no change |party = Independent (politician) |candidate = Others |votes = 2,599 |percentage = 1.14 }}{{Election box turnout no change |votes = 227,218 |percentage = }}{{Election box end}} Hopkins received 78.38% of the Polish-American vote, while Swift received 20.80%.[6] References1. ^https://books.google.com/books?id=7pQUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA335&lpg=PA335 {{Illinois elections}}{{Illinois-election-stub}}2. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.chipublib.org/mayor-john-patrick-hopkins-biography/ |title=Mayor John Patrick Hopkins Biography |publisher=Chicago Public Library |accessdate=2018-07-08}} 3. ^https://books.google.com/books?id=FyJzDwAAQBAJ&pg=PA89&lpg=PA89 4. ^{{cite web|title=RaceID=12348600704|url=https://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=486007|publisher=Our Campaigns|accessdate=December 5, 2018}} 5. ^1 {{cite book |title=The Chicago Daily News Almanac and Year Book |date=1911 |publisher=Chicago Daily News |location=Chicago |page=538}} 6. ^Kantowicz, Edward. “The Emergence of the Polish-Democratic Vote in Chicago.” Polish American Studies, vol. 29, no. 1/2, 1972, pp. 67–80.
