The team compiled a 4–2 record and outscored opponents by a total of 117 to 75.[1] Walter R. Allen was the team captain.[1] In September 1909, the school hired Samuel T. McBirnie (possibly Sam P. McBirney) as its head football coach. McBirnie was a resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who had coached an Oklahoma football team in 1908 and was regularly employed as a cashier at the Tulsa National Bank.[2] After six weeks in Albuquerque, McBirnie returned to his home in Tulsa. Assistant coach Hamilton H. Conwell and Hugh J. Collins took over the coaching responsibilities for the final game of the season against {{cfb link|year=1909|team=New Mexico A&M Aggies|title=New Mexico A&M}}.[3] In a season of highs and lows, the team achieved both its greatest margin of victory (51–0 over New Mexico A&M) and its greatest margin of defeat (0–53 against Colorado) to that point in program history.[1] At the end of the season, University of New Mexico players won six of eleven spots on the All-New Mexico football team: Silva at center; "Doc" Cornish at quarterback; McConnell at right tackle; Price at left tackle; Galles at end; and Walt Allen at right halfback.[4] Schedule{{CFB schedule|attend=yes |source=yes |October 26|at|El Paso Military Institute|Washington Park|El Paso, TX|L 0-11||[5][6] |October 30||El Paso Military Institute|Traction Park|Albuquerque, New Mexico Territory|W 15-0||[7] |November 6|at|Colorado||Boulder, CO|L 0-53|1,500|[8] |November 13||New Mexico Military Institute|Traction Park|Albuquerque, New Mexico Territory|W 28-2|> 600|[9] |November 25|at|Arizona||Tucson, Arizona Territory (rivalry)|W 23-11|1,500|[10] |December 3||{{cfb link|year=1909|team=New Mexico A&M Aggies|title=New Mexico A&M}}|Traction Park|Albuquerque, New Mexico Territory (rivalry)|W 51-0|1,000|[11][12] }} References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=2018 New Mexico Football Media Guide|publisher=University of New Mexico|year=2018|page=139|url=https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/unm.sidearmsports.com/documents/2018/8/30/2018_Media_Guide.pdf|accessdate=November 27, 2018}} {{New Mexico Lobos football navbox}}2. ^{{cite news|title=Oklahoma Man Will Coach 'Varsity Football Team|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=September 30, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25799658/oklahoma_man_will_coach_varsity/|via=Newspapers.com}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=M'Birnie Leaves for Home|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=November 28, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25799837/mbirnie_leaves_for_home/|via=Newspapers.com}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=New Mexico All-Star Football Team for Season Just Closed|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=December 8, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25801210/new_mexico_allstar_football_team_for/|via=Newspapers.com}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=U. of N.M. to Play Here Today|newspaper=El Paso Times|date=October 26, 1909|page=5|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25801610/u_of_nm_to_play_here_today/|via=Newspapers.com}} 6. ^{{cite news|title='Varsity Loses To El Paso Cadets 11 to 0|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=October 27, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25801851/varsity_loses_to_el_paso_cadets_11_to_0/|via=Newspapers.com}} 7. ^{{cite news|title=El Paso Cadets Go Down to Defeat Before Brilliant Work of Varsity Eleven|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=October 31, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25796775/el_paso_cadets_go_down_to_defeat_before/|via=Newspapers.com}} 8. ^{{cite news|title=New Mexico Goes Down to Defeat at Hands of Fast Colorado Aggregation|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=November 7, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25796415/new_mexico_goes_down_to_defeat_at_hands/|via=Newspapers.com}} 9. ^{{cite news|title=Varsity Worsts Soldier Eleven in Spectacular Exhibition by Score of 28 to 2|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=November 14, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25796597/varsity_worsts_soldier_eleven_in/|via=Newspapers.com}} 10. ^{{cite news|title=Varsity Victorious at Tucson; Arrive Home Tomorrow With Silver Cup|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=November 26, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25795522/varsity_victorious_at_tucson_arrive/|via=Newspapers.com}} 11. ^{{cite news|title=Gridiron Battle at Traction Park this Afternoon to Be Hard Fought Contest|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=December 3, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25798433/gridiron_battle_at_traction_park_this/|via=Newspapers.com}} 12. ^{{cite news|title=Varsity Undisputed Gridiron Champions of New Mexico Arizona and West Texas|newspaper=The Albuquerque Morning Journal|date=December 4, 1909|page=3|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25798316/varsity_undisputed_gridiron_champions/|via=Newspapers.com}} 2 : 1909 college football season|New Mexico Lobos football seasons |
