Quarterback Oscar "Ockie" Anderson, formerly of Colgate, was selected on November 22, 1917, as the team's captain.[1] Three Fort Dix players received honors on the 1917 All-Service football team: tackle Belford West (Walter Camp and Paul Purman, first teams); quarterback Anderson (Purman, first team; Camp, second team); and end Ellenberger (Camp, second team). Before the formation of an all-cantonment team, various units within Fort Dix had also competed in football. For example, a team representing the 307th Field Artillery at Camp Dix played a game against Princeton on October 27. Princeton won by a 7–0 score.[2] Teams representing individual regiments also competed in well-attended games.[3] The all-cantonment football team was organized in October with selection of players made through a "round robin elimination series" among 16 teams formed from the camp's athletes.[4] Schedule{{CFB schedule|attend=yes | source = yes |November 17|at|Camp Devens|Braves Field|Boston|W 19-0||[5] |December 1|vs|Camp Meade|Franklin Field|Philadelphia|W 13-6|5,000|[6] }} References1. ^{{cite news|title=Anderson Captain at Camp Dix|newspaper=The Boston Globe|date=November 23, 1917|page=9|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/22337300/anderson_captain_at_camp_dix/|via=Newspapers.com}} {{World War I military service football teams navbox}}2. ^{{cite news|title=Informal Varsity Wins From Soldier Eleven: Touchdown Made in First Few Minutes of Play Brings Victory, 7 to 0|newspaper=Daily Princetonian|date=October 29, 1917|page=1|url=http://theprince.princeton.edu/princetonperiodicals/cgi-bin/princetonperiodicals?a=d&d=Princetonian19171029-01&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN-------#|via=Newspapers.com}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=Athletics at Camp Dix|newspaper=Mount Carmel Item|date=December 20, 1917|page=5|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/22337874/athletics_at_camp_dix/|via=Newspapers.com}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=Material Good for Eleven at Wrightstown|newspaper=The Daily Home News|date=October 4, 1917|page=10|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/22338830/material_good_for_eleven_at_wrightstown/|via=Newspapers.com}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=Camp Dix All Star Shut Out Devens, 19-0|newspaper=The Boston Globe|date=November 18, 1917|page=14|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/22324022/camp_dix_all_stars_shut_out_devens_190/|via=Newspapers.com}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=Regimental Team of Camp Dix Wins Game From Camp Meade: Anderson's 83-Yard Run Wins Game for Camp Dix|newspaper=The Philadelphia Inquirer|date=December 2, 1917|page=21|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/22336790/regimental_team_of_camp_dix_wins_game/|via=Newspapers.com}} 2 : 1917 college football season|1917 in sports in New Jersey |
