The Vandals were led by third-year head coach Charles Erb and were in their seventh season in the Pacific Coast Conference. Home games were played on campus in Moscow at MacLean Field. Idaho compiled a 3–4–1 overall record and went {{nowrap|2–3}} in conference games. In their first year in the conference,[1] UCLA traveled to Moscow in late October and fell, {{nowrap|20–6.[2][3]}} It was UCLA's only loss in the seven-game series; the teams have not met since 1948. Idaho's only other win over a PCC team from the state of California came in 1947 at Stanford.[4] The week after the win over UCLA was the Battle of the Palouse with neighbor Washington State,[5] and the visiting Cougars inflicted a {{nowrap|26–0}} homecoming shutout before 10,000;[6] the teams had tied the previous season in Pullman.[7][8] Prior to the start of the game, the new Memorial Gymnasium was presented to the university;[6] the venue honors state residents who gave their lives in the service of their country in World War I.[9][10][11] Amid speculation about his future at Idaho,[12] Erb resigned on December 22, four weeks after the season's completion.[13] He was succeeded by Leo Calland, a USC assistant coach and former player for the Trojans.[14][15] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = no |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 29 | w/l = l | nonconf = y | opponent = Montana State | site_stadium = MacLean Field | site_cityst = Moscow, ID [16][17] | score = 13–15 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 6 | w/l = t | nonconf = y | away = y | opponent = Gonzaga | site_stadium = Gonzaga Stadium | site_cityst = Spokane, WA [18][19][20] | score = 6–6 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 13 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1928|team=Whitman Fighting Missionaries|title=Whitman}} | site_stadium = MacLean Field | site_cityst = Moscow, ID [21] | score = 26–13 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 19 | w/l = l | away = y | opponent = Stanford | site_stadium = Kezar Stadium | site_cityst = San Francisco, CA [22][23][24][25] | score = 0–47 | attend = 19,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 27 | w/l = w | opponent = UCLA | site_stadium = MacLean Field | site_cityst = Moscow, ID [1][2][3] | score = 20–6 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 3 | w/l = l | homecoming = y | opponent = Washington State | gamename = Battle of the Palouse | site_stadium = MacLean Field | site_cityst = Moscow, ID [5][6] | score = 0–26 | attend = 10,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 17 | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Montana | gamename = Little Brown Stein | site_stadium = Dornblaser Field | site_cityst = Missoula, MT [26] | score = 21–7 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 24 | w/l = l | away = y | opponent = USC | site_stadium = Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum | site_cityst = Los Angeles, CA [27] | score = 7–28 | attend = 10,000 }} }}
