It was the fifteenth season of East Tennessee State (Then known as State Teachers College, Johnson City) football. They were led by third-year head coach Gene McMurray,[1] who was a graduate of Maryville College and Columbia University. He was one of few coaches in the South to hold a doctorate. Prior to coaching for the school, he coached at Erwin and Rockwood High Schools, and also spent three years at Milligan College. The 1934 team had a total of forty players with thirteen returning lettermen. Despite a 3-3-2 record, they finished third in the conference. One of the most memorable moments was the Thanksgiving afternoon game with Milligan College before a record setting crowd at the new Roosevelt Stadium, even though the Bucs lost 0-14. Seniors Pryor Hunt and Lynn Massengill were considered "best players to ever play their positions at T.C." according to Berney Burelson.[2] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 1934 | poll = STATS FCS Poll released prior to game | timezone = Eastern |{{CFB schedule entry | date = | w/l = l | opponent = King | site_stadium = N/A | site_cityst = Johnson City, TN | score = 7–12 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = | w/l = t | opponent = Carson-Newman | site_stadium = N/A | site_cityst = Johnson City, TN | score = 6–6 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = | w/l = w | opponent = at Western Carolina | site_stadium = N/A | site_cityst = Cullowhee, NC | score = 6-2 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = | w/l = w | opponent = Maryville | site_stadium = N/A | site_cityst = Johnson City, TN | score = 19–6 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = | w/l = t | opponent = Union (Ky.) | site_stadium = N/A | site_cityst = Johnson City, TN | score = 0–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = | w/l = l | opponent = at Morehead State | site_stadium = N/A | site_cityst = Morehead, KY | score = 12–13 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = | w/l = w | opponent = Tusculum | site_stadium = N/A | site_cityst = Johnson City, TN | score = 6–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = | w/l = l | opponent = Milligan | site_stadium = Roosevelt Stadium | site_cityst = Johnson City, TN | score = 0–14 }} }}
