The Dukes were led by first-year head coach Aldo "Buff" Donelli. For the second time in four years, the Dukes upset cross-town rivals Pittsburgh, this time as the Panthers were the number one team in the nation.[1] The Dukes finished undefeated, with a record of 8–0–1, and ranked 10th in the AP Poll.[2] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 1939 | poll = AP |{{CFB schedule entry | date = {{tooltip|September 29|Friday}} | w/l = w | rank = | opponent = {{cfb link |year=1939 |team=Illinois Wesleyan Titans |title=Illinois Wesleyan}} | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Pittsburgh, PA | score = 31–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = {{tooltip|October 6|Friday}} | w/l = w | rank = | opponent = {{cfb link |year=1939 |team=Waynesburg Yellow Jackets |title=Waynesburg}} | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Pittsburgh, PA | score = 20–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 14 | w/l = w | away = y | rank = | opponent = {{cfb link |year=1939 |team=Manhattan Jaspers |title=Manhattan}} | site_stadium = Polo Grounds[3] | site_cityst = New York City, NY | score = 7–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 21 | w/l = w | neutral = y | rank = | opponent = Pittsburgh | opprank = 1 | site_stadium = Pitt Stadium | site_cityst = Pittsburgh, PA | score = 21–13 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = {{tooltip|October 27|Friday}} | w/l = w | rank = 11 | opponent = Texas Tech | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Pittsburgh, PA | score = 13–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 4 | w/l = w | rank = 13 | opponent = {{cfb link |year=1939 |team=Marquette Golden Avalanche |title=Marquette}} | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Pittsburgh, PA | score = 21–13 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 11 | w/l = w | away = y | rank = 12 | opponent = {{cfb link |year=1939 |team=NC State Wolfpack |title=NC State}} | site_stadium = Riddick Stadium | site_cityst = Raleigh, NC | score = 7–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 25 | w/l = w | rank = 12 | opponent = {{cfb link |year=1939 |team=Carnegie Tech Tartans |title=Carnegie Tech}} | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Pittsburgh, PA | score = 22–7 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = December 2 | w/l = t | rank = 6 | opponent = Detroit | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Pittsburgh, PA | score = 10–10 }} }} Source:[4] References1. ^{{cite news |title=Duquesne's Last-Half Surge Topples Pitt, 21-13 |work=The Washington Post |date=October 22, 1939 |page=X1}} {{Duquesne Dukes football navbox}}{{DEFAULTSORT:1939 Duquesne Dukes Football Team}}2. ^{{cite web |url=http://collegepollarchive.com/football/ap/seasons.cfm?seasonid=1939 |title=1939 Final AP Football Poll |work=College Poll Archive |access-date=May 14, 2017}} 3. ^{{cite news |title=Duquesne Subdues Manhattan, 7 to 0 |last=Effrat |first=Louis |work=New York Times |date=October 15, 1939 |page=85}} 4. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/duquesne/1939-schedule.html |title=1939 Duquesne Dukes Schedule and Results |work=Sports-Reference.com |access-date=May 14, 2017}} 4 : 1939 college football season|Duquesne Dukes football seasons|College football undefeated seasons|1939 in sports in Pennsylvania |
