The team compiled an 8–2 record (5–0 against Big 6 opponents), won the Big 6 championship, lost to Georgia Tech in the 1940 Orange Bowl, outscored all opponents by a combined total of 155 to 79, and was ranked No. 6 in the final AP Poll. Don Faurot was the head coach for the fifth of 19 seasons.[1][2] The team played its home games at Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Missouri. The team's leading scorer was Paul Christman with 42 points.[3] Christman was also selected as a first-team All-American by the All-America Board,[4] Collier's Weekly (chosen by Grantland Rice),[5] Newspaper Enterprise Association,[6] and The Sporting News.[4] He finished third in the 1939 Heisman Trophy voting, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1956, and had his jersey (No. 44) retired at Missouri.[7] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rank = y | attend = y | source = y | rankyear = 1939 | poll = AP |September 30||Colorado |October 7|at|Ohio State |October 14|at|{{cfb link|year=1939|team=Washington University Bears|title=Washington (MO)}} |October 21||Kansas State||Memorial Stadium|Columbia, MO|W 9-7|| |October 28|at|Iowa State||Clyde Williams Field|Ames, IA|W 21-6|| |November 4||No. 10 Nebraska||Memorial Stadium|Columbia, MO|W 27-13|| |November 11|at|No. 17 {{cfb link|year=1939|team=NYU Violets|title=NYU}} |November 18||No. 5 Oklahoma|12|Memorial Stadium|Columbia, MO|W 7-6|| |November 25|at|Kansas|10|Memorial Stadium|Lawrence, KS|W 20-0|| |January 1, 1940|vs|No. 16 Georgia Tech|6|Burdine Stadium|Miami, FL (Orange Bowl)|L 7-21|35,000|[8] }} References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/missouri/1939-schedule.html|title=1939 Missouri Tigers Schedule and Results|publisher=Sports Reference LLC|work=SR/College Football|accessdate=November 10, 2016}} {{Missouri Tigers football navbox}}{{Big Eight Conference football champions}}2. ^{{cite web|title=2014 Mizzou Football Records Book|publisher=University of Missouri|page=40|accessdate=March 23, 2019|url=http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/miss/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/2014-15/misc_non_event/14-records-book.pdf}} 3. ^2014 Mizzou Football Records Book, p. 26. 4. ^1 {{cite book|title=ESPN College Football Encyclopedia|page=1178|publisher=ESPN Books|year=2005|isbn=1401337031}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=All America Is Picked By Colliers|work=Wisconsin State Journal|date=1939-12-09}} 6. ^{{cite news|author=Harry Grayson|title=NEA Picks All America Eleven: Nile Kinnick Named Back of Season|work=Ironwood Daily Globe|date=1939-11-28}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=2014 Mizzou Football Records Book|publisher=University of Missouri|accessdate=November 11, 2016|url=http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/miss/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/2014-15/misc_non_event/14-records-book.pdf}} 8. ^{{cite news|title=35,000 See Missouri Beaten|newspaper=The Miami Daily News|date=January 2, 1940|page=B1|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/29865444/35000_see_missouri_beaten/|via=Newspapers.com}} 4 : 1939 Big Six Conference football season|Missouri Tigers football seasons|Big Eight Conference football champion seasons|1939 in sports in Missouri |
