BackgroundThe by-election was caused by the death of incumbent MP Toko Ratana on 30 October 1944. He had been the MP since 1935. The by-election was won by his younger brother Matiu Ratana who also succeeded him as head of the Ratana Church. They were sons of the church founder T W Ratana. Ratana had an electoral alliance with Labour The challenger Pei te Hurinui Jones was supported by National and Kingitanga, the Maori King Movement. The other six challengers all lost their deposits, although one motorist complainant was aggrieved that all the candidates got a petrol allocation of 250 gallons when the usual personal allocation was ten or fifteen gallons![1] ResultsThe following table gives the election results (the results included some "servicemens votes" [2] from overseas):[3][4][5]{{Western Maori by-election, 1945}}References1. ^{{cite web|url= https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/AS19450215.2.60?end_date=15-02-1945&phrase=0&query=Western+Maori&start_date=15-02-1945 |title= Petrol allowances protest by motorists |publisher= Auckland Star" in Papers Past (New Zealand) |date=15 February 1945 }} {{1939–1995 New Zealand by-elections}}{{NewZealand-poli-stub}}{{Oceania-election-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url= https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/AS19450212.2.22?end_date=1945-02-12&phrase=0&query=Western+Maori&start_date=1945-02-12 |title= Labour win (provisional) |publisher= Auckland Star in Papers Past (New Zealand) |date=12 February 1945 }} 3. ^{{cite web|url= https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19450224.2.104?end_date=29-04-1945&phrase=0&query=Western+Maori&start_date=10-02-1945 |title= Western Maori (final result) |publisher= Evening Post in Papers Past (New Zealand) |date=17 February 1945 }} 4. ^{{cite web|url= https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19450224.2.104?end_date=29-04-1945&phrase=0&query=Western+Maori&start_date=10-02-1945 |title= Labour win (provisional) |publisher= Evening Post in Papers Past (New Zealand) |date=12 February 1945 }} 5. ^{{cite web|url= https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/BOPT19450212.2.12?end_date=29-04-1945&phrase=0&query=Western+Maori+final&start_date=10-02-1945 |title= Labour keeps seat (provisional) |publisher= Bay of Plenty Times in Papers Past (New Zealand) |date=12 February 1945 }} 3 : By-elections in New Zealand|1945 elections in New Zealand|Māori politics |
