In their 11th year under head coach Ray Eliot, the Illini compiled a 4–5 record and finished in a three-way tie for sixth place in the Big Ten Conference.[1] Halfback Al Brosky was selected as the team's most valuable player.[2] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 1952 | poll = AP |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 27 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = 5 | opponent = Iowa State | site_stadium = Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Champaign, IL | score = 33–7 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 4 | w/l = l | away = y | rank = 2 | opponent = Wisconsin | opprank = 8 | site_stadium = Camp Randall Stadium | site_cityst = Madison, WI | score = 6–20 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 11 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = 13 | opponent = Washington | site_stadium = Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Champaign, IL | score = 48–14 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 18 | w/l = l | away = y | rank = 17 | opponent = Minnesota | site_stadium = Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 7–13 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 25 | w/l = l | rank = | opponent = Purdue | gamename = Purdue Cannon | site_stadium = Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Champaign, IL | score = 12–40 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 1 | w/l = w | away = y | rank = | opponent = Michigan | opprank = 15 | site_stadium = Michigan Stadium | site_cityst = Ann Arbor, MI | score = 22–13 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 8 | w/l = w | away = y | rank = | opponent = Iowa | site_stadium = Iowa Stadium | site_cityst = Iowa City, IA | score = 33–13 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 15 | w/l = l | rank = | opponent = Ohio State | gamename = Illibuck Trophy | site_stadium = Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Champaign, IL | score = 7–27 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 22 | w/l = l | rank = | opponent = Northwestern | gamename = Sweet Sioux Tomahawk | site_stadium = Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Champaign, IL | score = 26–28 | attend = }} }} Iowa gameFollowing the win at Iowa, which was full of penalties and a couple of ejections for fighting, Iowa students began to throw fruit, cans, and bottles at the officials and Illinois' team as they left the field. One Iowa student was also punched by an Illinois player in the melee. Illinois and Iowa were not scheduled to play in 1953 and 1954, but their athletic directors decided to expand that timeline to 1958 in order to allow for a "cooling-off" period. That time frame was eventually extended until 1967, which created a 14-season gap in the series between the conference schools.[3][4] References1. ^{{cite web|title=1952 Illinois Schedule and Results|publisher=Sports Reference LLC|work=SR/College Football|accessdate=December 16, 2015|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/illinois/1952-schedule.html}} {{Illinois Fighting Illini football navbox}}{{collegefootball-season-stub}}{{Illinois-sport-team-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|title=Fighting Illini Football Record Book|publisher=University of Illinois|year=2015|accessdate=December 28, 2016|page=155|url=http://sidearm.sites.s3.amazonaws.com/fightingillini.com/documents/2015/8/3/3_History_7_30.pdf}} 3. ^{{cite web | last = Dochterman| first = Scott| title = Special report: How pass interference, a jawbreaker and tossed apples nearly canned the Iowa-Illinois football rivalry| publisher = The Gazette | date = June 11, 2011| url = http://www.thegazette.com/2011/06/11/special-report-how-pass-interference-a-jawbreaker-punch-and-tossed-apples-nearly-canned-the-iowa-illinois-football-rivalry| accessdate = October 13, 2017}} 4. ^http://www.winsipedia.com/games/illinois/vs/iowa Illinois vs. Iowa All-Time.
