Under head coach Pappy Waldorf, the team compiled an overall record of 4–4–2 and 2–2–2 in conference.[1][2] The 1953 season is partially associated with a recruiting scandal involving star freshman quarterback Ronnie Knox. In order to have Knox enroll at the university, the California football booster club promised him that Knox's step father to be hired as a scout, his high school coach would be hired as an assistant coach, and that Knox himself would be given a job writing for a local newspaper and also be paid $500 per year by the booster club.[3] Knox enrolled at Cal but California's administration found out and made sure that the benefits would not be provided. After one year at Cal, Knox transferred to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).[3] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 1953 | poll = AP | timezone = Pacific |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 19 | time = | w/l = l | nonconf = y | rank = 14 | opponent = Baylor | opprank = 20 | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | score = 0–25 | attend = 34,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 26 | time = | w/l = w | away = y | rank = 14 | opponent = Oregon State | site_stadium = Multnomah Stadium | site_cityst = Portland, OR | score = 26–0 | attend = 13,442[4] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 3 | time = | w/l = l | nonconf = y | rank = | opponent = Ohio State | opprank = 6 | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | score = 19–33 | attend = 47,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 10 | time = | w/l = w | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1953|team=Penn Quakers|title=Penn}} | opprank = 20 | site_stadium = Franklin Field | site_cityst = Philadelphia, PA | score = 40–0 | attend = 52,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 17 | time = | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = 16 | opponent = San Jose State | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | score = 34–14 | attend = 39,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 24 | time = | w/l = l | rank = | opponent = USC | opprank = 11 | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | score = 20–32 | attend = 78,000[5] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 31 | time = | w/l = l | away = y | rank = | opponent = UCLA | opprank = 10 | gamename = rivalry | site_stadium = Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum | site_cityst = Los Angeles, CA | score = 7–20 | attend = 70,037 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 7 | time = | w/l = w | rank = | opponent = Washington | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | score = 53–25 | attend = 36,000[6] }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 14 | time = | w/l = t | rank = | opponent = Oregon | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | score = 0–0 | attend = 24,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 21 | time = | w/l = t | away = y | rank = | opponent = Stanford | opprank = 16 | gamename = 56th Big Game | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | score = 21–21 | attend = 91,500 }} }}[7] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/california/1953-schedule.html|title=1953 California Golden Bears Schedule and Results|publisher=Sports Reference LLC|work=SR/College Football|accessdate=October 21, 2016}} {{California Golden Bears football navbox}}{{collegefootball-season-stub}}{{California-sport-team-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|title=California 2015 Football Information Guide |url=https://admin.xosn.com/attachments1/423534.pdf |website=CalBears.com |publisher=Cal Golden Bears Athletics |accessdate=October 21, 2016 |page=164 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20161026170757/https://admin.xosn.com/attachments1/423534.pdf |archivedate=October 26, 2016 |df= }} 3. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2010/5/18/1473469/the-sordid-tale-of-ronnie-knox-and |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100521034044/http://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2010/5/18/1473469/the-sordid-tale-of-ronnie-knox-and |dead-url=yes |archive-date=2010-05-21 |title=The Sordid Tale of Ronnie Knox and the Dissolution of the PCC |last=Kranz |first=Nick |date=2010-05-19 |website=California Golden Blogs |access-date=2016-06-28 |df= }} 4. ^{{cite book|title=2017 Oregon State Football Media Guide Football|chapter=Year-By-Year Results|publisher=Oregon State Athletics|page=167|url=http://osubeavers.com/documents/2017/8/1//Section_9_Year_by_Year_Results.pdf?id=7589}} 5. ^{{cite book|title=USC Football 2017 Media Guide|publisher=University of Southern California Athletics|page=70|url=http://usctrojans.com/documents/2017/7/25/2017_USC_Football_Media_Guide.pdf}} 6. ^{{cite book|title=2017 Washington Football Information|publisher=University of Washington Athletics|page=192|url=http://gohuskies.com/documents/2017/7/24/2017_FB_Guide.pdf}} 7. ^{{cite book|title=2015 Football Information Guide|date=2015|publisher=Cal Athletics|page=164|url=https://admin.xosn.com/attachments1/423534.pdf|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20161026170757/https://admin.xosn.com/attachments1/423534.pdf|archivedate=2016-10-26|df=}} 3 : 1953 Pacific Coast Conference football season|California Golden Bears football seasons|1953 in sports in California |
