American Independent Party candidate George Wallace received the most votes, and won all twelve of the state’s electoral college votes.[2] Wallace, who ran a campaign based upon support for segregation, won all but seventeen of the state’s 159 counties. Nixon won ten, all either suburban Atlanta counties or historically pro-Union counties of North Georgia. Despite Wallace’s sweep of most of the state south of Atlanta, Cobb and DeKalb counties were two of only three amongst 210 southern counties carried by Goldwater for the Republicans for the first time ever or since Reconstruction to vote for Nixon.[3] The Voting Rights Act and consequent enfranchisement of African-Americans allowed Humphrey to carry seven majority-black counties. With 42.83% of the popular vote, Georgia would prove to be Wallace's fourth strongest state after Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.[4] ResultsUnited States presidential election in Georgia, 1968[2] |

References1. ^Although he was born in California and he served as a U.S. Senator from California, in 1968 Richard Nixon's official state of residence was New York, because he moved there to practice law after his defeat in the 1962 California gubernatorial election. During his first term as president, Nixon re-established his residency in California. Consequently, most reliable reference books list Nixon's home state as New York in the 1968 election and his home state as California in the 1972 (and 1960) election. 2. ^1 1968 Presidential General Election Results - Georgia US Election Atlas 3. ^Menendez, Albert J.; The Geography of Presidential Elections in the United States, 1868-2004; pp. 94-95 {{ISBN|0786422173}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/stats.php?year=1968&f=0&off=0&elect=0|title=1968 Presidential Election Statistics|publisher=Dave Leip’s Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections|date= |accessdate=2018-03-05}}
