The Local Government Act 1972 stipulated that the elected members were to shadow and eventually take over from the predecessor corporation on 1 April 1974. The order in which the councillors were elected dictated their term serving, with third-place candidates serving two years and up for re-election in 1975, second-placed three years expiring in 1976 and 1st-placed five years until 1978.[1] The election resulted in Labour gaining control of the council.[1] Election result{{Election Summary Begin|title = Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council Election Result 1973[1]}}{{Election Summary Party||party = Labour Party (UK) |seats = 57 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 95.0 |votes % = 52.5 |votes = 32,319 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Independent (politician) |seats = 1 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 1.7 |votes % = 7.7 |votes = 4,727 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Lincoln Democratic Labour Association |seats = 1 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 1.7 |votes % = 6.0 |votes = 3,687 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Independent Labour |seats = 1 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 1.7 |votes % = 5.0 |votes = 3,062 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Conservative Party (UK) |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 9.7 |votes = 5,977 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 9.2 |votes = 5,679 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary| |party = Citizens |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 3.4 |votes = 2,090 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Residents Association |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 2.2 |votes = 1,329 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Independent Socialist |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 1.4 |votes = 850 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Socialist Party of Great Britain |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 1.6 |votes = 978 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Communist Party of Great Britain |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 1.4 |votes = 844 |plus/minus = N/A }}{{Election box end}} This resulted in the following composition of the council:[1]
