The twelfth World Masters Athletics Championships were held in Durban, South Africa, from July 17-27, 1997. ^[1] The World Masters Athletics Championships serve the division of the sport of athletics for people over 35 years of age, referred to as masters athletics.

A full range of track and field events were held, along with a cross country race and a marathon.
