The 2005–06 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 3 December and finished on 4 May. Sporting again won the regional competition and qualified into the 2006 Cape Verdean Football Championships. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago Sul, ARFSS).[1][2] All matches were played at Estádio da Várzea and Campo de Sucupira, the latter which was temporarily used for one more season. The field no longer exists today and several buildings dominate the former field.

Sporting Praia was the defending team of the title. A total of 18 clubs participated in the competition, 10 in the Premier Division and eight in the Second.[2] It was the first competition that took place in two municipalities, AD Ribeira Grande, the club based in Cidade Velha in Ribeira Grande de Santiago competed for the first time after being registered and played in the Second Division.

Overview

A total of 233 goals were scored, fewer than last season. Sporting scored the most with 47 and dominated over one-fifth of the total, second was Académica with 33, third was Travadores with 26 and fourth placed Boavista and ninth placed Vitória with 22. The least was Delta with 12, second were fifth placed Bairro and seventh placed Lapaloma with 17.[2] On the opposites, Delta conceded the most with 57, second least was Vitória with 29 and third least was Celtic with 27. Travadores conceded the least with ten.

In the Second Division competition took place with Vila Nova (or Vilanova) winning the title and would be promoted next season. Second placed Celtic which finished eighth (due to that Vitória who finished ninth had scored the fourth most regional goals) remained in the division after winning the decisional match competitions. Delta was relegated and competed in the Second Division next season, they did not return into the Premier Division until the 2015-16 season.

It was the only time that the competition took place during the parliamentary elections. There was a break in the competition during the presidential election which took place on February 12 and a week later.
