In the United Kingdom the tournament was broadcast on ITV4. Neil Robertson was the defending champion,[2] but he was beaten 2–4 in the group 1 semi-final by Stuart Bingham. Prize fundThe breakdown of prize money for 2016 is shown below:[3]
PlayersPlayers qualified for the event by winning important tournaments since the previous Champion of Champions. Entry was guaranteed for the defending champion, winners of rankings events and winners of the following non-rankings events: 2016 Masters, 2016 Championship League and 2016 China Championship.[4] Remaining places were then allocated to winners of European Tour events (in the order they were played) and then, if required, to winners of the 2016 Snooker Shoot-Out, 2016 Six-red World Championship and 2016 World Seniors Championship. Ding Junhui was awarded a wildcard for being this year's World Championship runner-up, but later qualified on his own right by winning the Six-red World Championship and 2016 Shanghai Masters.[5] With several players winning more than one tournament, there were fewer than 16 players who qualified by winning tournaments. Remaining places were allocated to the highest ranked player, not already qualified, on the one-year ranking list. After the 2016 International Championship there had only been 14 different winners and, with only one event left, Stuart Bingham, who was 8th in the one-year ranking list, qualified at that stage.[6] The final place was left for the winner of the 2016 China Championship, a non-ranking event. During the China Championship Marco Fu withdrew and Joe Perry, 9th on the one-year ranking list, replaced him. At that stage John Higgins was the only non-qualified player left in the China Championship and, since he was 10th on the one-year ranking list, he therefore became the final qualifier. Moreover, he subsequently went on to win the tournament by beating Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-7 in the final. The following players qualified for the tournament:[7][8]
4 players were seeded. The seedings were determined in early October. Defending champion Neil Robertson was the 1st seed, while Mark Selby and Ronnie O'Sullivan were seeded 2nd and 3rd respectively for being the winner of last season's triple crown events. As Robertson was seeded twice for capturing last year's UK Championship, Shaun Murphy became the last seed for being the highest ranked player not seeded after the 2016 Shanghai Masters.[10] Main draw{{16TeamBracket| RD1= Group semi-finals (Last 16) Best of 7 frames | RD2= Group finals (Quarter-finals) Best of 11 frames | RD3= Semi-finals Best of 11 frames | RD4= Final Best of 19 frames | subgroup1=Group 1 (8 November) | subgroup2=Group 4 (10 November) | subgroup3=Group 3 (7 November) | subgroup4=Group 2 (9 November) | RD1-seed01=1 | RD1-team01={{flagicon|AUS}} Neil Robertson | RD1-score01=2 | RD1-seed02= | RD1-team02={{flagicon|ENG}} Stuart Bingham | RD1-score02=4 | RD1-seed03= | RD1-team03={{flagicon|CHN}} Ding Junhui | RD1-score03=4 | RD1-seed04= | RD1-team04={{flagicon|ENG}} Ali Carter | RD1-score04=2 | RD1-seed05= | RD1-team05={{flagicon|ENG}} Judd Trump | RD1-score05=4 | RD1-seed06= | RD1-team06={{flagicon|SCO}} Anthony McGill | RD1-score06=3 | RD1-seed07=4 | RD1-team07={{flagicon|ENG}} Shaun Murphy | RD1-score07=2 | RD1-seed08= | RD1-team08={{flagicon|SCO}} John Higgins | RD1-score08=4 | RD1-seed09=3 | RD1-team09={{nowrap|{{flagicon|ENG}} Ronnie O'Sullivan}} | RD1-score09=4 | RD1-seed10= | RD1-team10={{flagicon|FIN}} Robin Hull | RD1-score10=2 | RD1-seed11= | RD1-team11={{flagicon|ENG}} Martin Gould | RD1-score11=4 | RD1-seed12= | RD1-team12={{flagicon|ENG}} Mark Davis | RD1-score12=3 | RD1-seed13= | RD1-team13={{flagicon|NIR}} Mark Allen | RD1-score13=4 | RD1-seed14= | RD1-team14={{flagicon|ENG}} Joe Perry | RD1-score14=2 | RD1-seed15=2 | RD1-team15={{flagicon|ENG}} Mark Selby | RD1-score15=4 | RD1-seed16= | RD1-team16={{flagicon|CHN}} Liang Wenbo | RD1-score16=0 | RD2-seed01= | RD2-team01={{flagicon|ENG}} Stuart Bingham | RD2-score01=4 | RD2-seed02= | RD2-team02={{flagicon|CHN}} Ding Junhui | RD2-score02=6 | RD2-seed03= | RD2-team03={{flagicon|ENG}} Judd Trump | RD2-score03=4 | RD2-seed04= | RD2-team04={{flagicon|SCO}} John Higgins | RD2-score04=6 | RD2-seed05=3 | RD2-team05={{nowrap|{{flagicon|ENG}} Ronnie O'Sullivan}} | RD2-score05=6 | RD2-seed06= | RD2-team06={{flagicon|ENG}} Martin Gould | RD2-score06=2 | RD2-seed07= | RD2-team07={{flagicon|NIR}} Mark Allen | RD2-score07=6 | RD2-seed08=2 | RD2-team08={{flagicon|ENG}} Mark Selby | RD2-score08=5 | RD3-seed01= | RD3-team01= {{flagicon|CHN}} Ding Junhui | RD3-score01=5 | RD3-seed02= | RD3-team02={{flagicon|SCO}} John Higgins | RD3-score02=6 | RD3-seed03=3 | RD3-team03={{nowrap|{{flagicon|ENG}} Ronnie O'Sullivan}} | RD3-score03=6 | RD3-seed04= | RD3-team04={{flagicon|NIR}} Mark Allen | RD3-score04=2 | RD4-seed01= | RD4-team01={{flagicon|SCO}} John Higgins | RD4-score01=10 | RD4-seed02=3 | RD4-team02={{nowrap|{{flagicon|ENG}} Ronnie O'Sullivan}} | RD4-score02=7 }} Final
