}}{{Politics of Palau}}General elections were held in Palau on 1 November 2016 to elect a President and the National Congress.[1]

Presidential election

{{Main|Palauan presidential election, 2016}}

Incumbent President of Palau Tommy Remengesau sought re-election. He was challenged by his brother-in-law, Senator Surangel Whipps Jr.

On November 4, 2016, Remengesau was leading Whipps by just 78 votes.[2]

On November 10, 2016, it was announced that Remengesau had been re-elected President of Palau, defeating Whipps by 255 votes.[3]

Electoral system

The President of Palau is elected using the two-round system.[4] The 16 members of the House of Delegates are elected in single-member constituencies based on the states using first-past-the-post voting.[5]

The 11 members of the Senate are elected from a single nationwide constituency by block voting, with each voter having 11 votes to cast.[5] The number of Senators elected to the Palau National Congress has been reduced to 11 from the previous 13 for the 2016 general election.[2]
