The 2016-17 Santo Antão Island League (South) season was the competition of the second-tier football in southern (and the western) part the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde. Its started on 12 November and finished on 26 March. The tournament was organized by the Santo Antão South Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Zona Sul do Santo Antão, ARFZSSA).[1] Académica do Porto Novo won the 11th title and their 12th overall and finished with 34 points and participated in the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships in mid May and the first with changes as it will be divided into three groups, they played with Paulense, champion of the north of the island and Mindelense in which Académica Porto Novo lost to last season at the nationals along with the title.

Also Académica Porto Novo received qualification into the upcoming Santo Antão South Super Cup and the Santo Antão Super Cup later in 2017.

Overview

Académica do Porto Novo was again the defending team of the title for the sixth time. Seven clubs participated in the competition; two did not participate, Maritimo and Tarrafal FC de Monte Trigo, which would be an 18-round and a 72-match season, while Sanjoanense and Santo André returned to the competition, also they played their season's first match with each other.[2]

A total of 158 goals were scored in the season, eight less than last season. Académica led almost for the entire season except for the second round which was led by Sanjoanenses. The highest scoring match was Académica defeating Inter 8-0 on January 21, as there were no matches ended with ten goals or more. Not a single loss was made in two seasons for Académica Porto Novo. At the end of the season, it still holds the records for an unbeaten streak at home numbering 35. Académica scored 51, fewer than last season and made it the second highest for the club and regional history, Académica won their seventh consecutive title and any of the island leagues, other clubs who won seven consecutive titles were Mindelense (1975–82) and Botafogo (1976–83). It is behind Brava's No Pintcha (1994-2001). Second in goal scoring was Sanjoanenses with 37.

Sporting Porto Novo got their next win in seasons, though the club conceded the most goals numbering 40. On the opposites Académica conceded the fewest with five, Santo André got not a single win but two draws, they did not played their last match of the season against Académica Porto Novo due to financial concerns and in part not to concede more goals than Sporting Porto Novo, Santo André finished last.

It was the first time that the season started in November. There were breaks in the championship competition, the first, fourth and the final weeks of December, the first and second weeks of January and the first weeks of February and March due to the subregional and regional cup competitions. Again, the championships finished before the subregional and regional cup competitions, the subregional cup competitions will finish later in April.
