Elections to North Lanarkshire Council were held on Thursday 4 May 2017, on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election utilised the twenty-one wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 77 Councillors being elected. This represented an increase of 7 seats and 1 additional ward when compared to 2012. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. The election saw the Scottish National Party overtake Labour as the largest party on the council. Despite The SNP winning the most seats and most votes, North Lanarkshire is run by a minority Labour administration. Labour leader Jim Logue was appointed Leader of the Council with the support of Conservative and Independent councillors.[1] Following a Conservative candidate refusing to take his seat[2] a by-election was held which was won by Labour,[3] leaving Labour and SNP with an equal number of seats. Labour became the largest party in North Lanarkshire Council after Cllr Cochrane (Fortissat) resigned from The SNP to become an Independent[4] Election result{{Election Summary Begin|title = North Lanarkshire Local Election Result 2017}}{{Election Summary Party||party = Scottish National Party |seats = 33 |gain = 4 |loss = 1 |net = +3 |seats % = 42.86 |votes % = 38.46 |votes = 42,051 |plus/minus = +3.86 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Scottish Labour Party |seats = 32 |gain = 1 |loss = 13 |net = -12 |seats % = 41.56 |votes % = 32.99 |votes = 36,063 |plus/minus = -17.81 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party |seats = 10 |gain = +10 |loss = - |net = +10 |seats % = 12.99 |votes % = 15.86 |votes = 17,338 |plus/minus = +10.36 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Independent (politician) |seats = 2 |gain = 1 |loss = 1 |net = - |seats % = 2.6 |votes % = 7.48 |votes = 8,178 |plus/minus = +1.38 }}{{Election Summary| |party = Independent Alliance North Lanarkshire |seats = 0 |gain = - |loss = - |net = - |seats % = - |votes % = 2.58 |votes = 2,823 |plus/minus = - }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Scottish Green Party |seats = 0 |gain = - |loss = - |net = - |seats % = - |votes % = 1.32 |votes = 1,444 |plus/minus = - }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = A Better Britain – Unionist Party |seats = 0 |gain = - |loss = - |net = - |seats % = - |votes % = 0.51 |votes = 559 |plus/minus = - }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = UKIP |seats = 0 |gain = - |loss = - |net = - |seats % = - |votes % = 0.39 |votes = 428 |plus/minus = - }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = RISE – Scotland's Left Alliance |seats = 0 |gain = - |loss = - |net = - |seats % = - |votes % = 0.17 |votes = 186 |plus/minus = - }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Scottish Socialist Party |seats = 0 |gain = - |loss = - |net = - |seats % = - |votes % = 0.15 |votes = 167 |plus/minus = -0.25 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Solidarity (Scotland) |seats = 0 |gain = - |loss = - |net = - |seats % = - |votes % = 0.09 |votes = 94 |plus/minus = - }}{{Election box end}}Note: "Votes" are the first preference votes.
