In addition to the storms in the 3 recognized cyclone basins, a subtropical storm formed off the coast of Chile on May 4, 2018 and persisted until May 10. Researchers unofficially named the system Lexi.[1] This was a highly unusual (possibly unprecedented) event, in an area where the surface ocean temperatures are regarded as too low for the necessary sustained thunderstorm activity to generate a tropical cyclone.[2]
