The club competed in the second tier of the English football system, the English Football League Championship for a fourth consecutive year. This was the first season under new head coach Nuno Espírito Santo. The season was a success: the club was promoted to the Premier League after a six-year absence. This was officially achieved on 14 April after third-placed Fulham failed to beat Brentford.[1][2][3] One week later the team secured the title, having led the division since late October. The tally of 99 points was the club's highest-ever in the second tier. When Wolves's accounts covering the 2017–18 season were published on 5 March 2019, they recorded a pre-tax loss of £57.16 million, of which around £20 million was due to bonuses paid to staff and players for achieving promotion to the Premier League.[4][5] It was noted that the loss, which was more than double the loss in the previous financial year, represented a deficit of more than a £1 million per week.[6] MatchesPre-seasonWolves began their pre-season training at the Compton Park training ground on 26 June 2017 before playing six friendlies, included three during a stay in Austria.[7] {{footballbox collapsible|date=12 July 2017 |time=18:00 CEST |round=Friendly |team1=Werder Bremen |score=0–1 |report=[https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/first-team/20170712-dicko-sinks-werder-bremen/ Report] |team2=Wolverhampton Wanderers |goals2=Dicko {{goal|50}} |stadium=Parkstadion |location=Zell am Ziller, Austria |attendance= |referee=Walter Altmann |result=W |stack=y }}{{footballbox collapsible |date=15 July 2017 |time=17:00 CEST |round=Friendly |team1=Viktoria Plzeň |score=1–2 |report=[https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/first-team/20170715-victorious-over-viktoria/ Report] |team2=Wolverhampton Wanderers |goals1=Bakoš {{goal|64}} |goals2=Dicko {{goal|16}} Doherty {{goal|31}} |stadium=Waldstadion |location=Westerndorf, Austria |attendance=300 |referee= |result=W |stack=y }}{{footballbox collapsible |date=18 July 2017 |time=18:00 CEST |round=Friendly |team1=Jablonec |score=1–0 |report=https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/first-team/20170718-friendly-defeat-to-fk-jablonec/ |team2=Wolverhampton Wanderers |goals1=Trávník {{goal|51}} |stadium=Silberstadt Arena |location=Schwaz, Austria |attendance= |referee= |result=L |stack=y }}{{footballbox collapsible |date=22 July 2017 |time=15:00 BST |round=Friendly |team1=Shrewsbury Town |score=2–0 |report=[https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/first-team/20170722-friendly-defeat/ Report] |team2=Wolverhampton Wanderers |goals1=Rodman {{goal|7}} Morris {{goal|30}} |stadium=Montgomery Waters Meadow |location=Shrewsbury |attendance=5,409 |referee=Rob Lewis |result=L |stack=y }}{{footballbox collapsible |date=25 July 2017 |time=19:30 BST |round=Friendly |team1=Peterborough United |score=0–1 |report=[https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/first-team/20170725-austin-powers-home-wolves-winner/ Report] |team2=Wolverhampton Wanderers |goals2=Samuels {{goal|70}} |stadium=ABAX Stadium |location=Peterborough |attendance= |referee=Neil Hair |result=W |stack=y }}{{footballbox collapsible |date=29 July 2017 |time=15:00 BST |round=Friendly |team1=Wolverhampton Wanderers |score=1–0 |report=[https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/first-team/20170729-cavaleiro-strike-sinks-foxes/ Report] |team2=Leicester City |goals1=Cavaleiro {{goal|60}} |stadium=Molineux |location=Wolverhampton |attendance=11,953 |referee=Steve Martin |result=W |stack= }} Football League Championship{{See also|2017–18 EFL Championship}}A total of 24 teams competed in the EFL Championship in the 2017–18 season.
