The 2018 Cologne attack was an attack and subsequent hostage-taking that occurred at the central railway station of Cologne, Germany, on 15 October 2018.

Incident

The perpetrator, Mohammad Abo R., threw a molotov cocktail into a McDonald's fast food restaurant at the Cologne train station at 6:45 am (12:45 pm Germany time) [1] injuring two victims, one of them a 14-year-old girl who suffered burn injuries to her legs. A pharmacy employee was subsequently taken hostage when the perpetrator fled into a pharmacy behind the Cologne train station with what was reportedly a handgun. He claimed to be a member of ISIL and reportedly demanded free passage on a flight to his home country and the release of a jailed Tunisian woman.[2][3][4][5] After police communicated with the perpetrator for more than two hours, a SWAT team shot and critically wounded the perpetrator in his abdomen via a highly trained marksman. They then freed the female hostage at 9 am (5 pm German time) when they raided the pharmacy. The hostage received medical treatment for the non-life-threatening injuries that she sustained. Canisters of gasoline were found throughout the pharmacy including one taped to the hostage.[2][3][4] Police later confirmed that Mohammad Abo R. had been hit by several shots, though no shots were initially reported by police.[3][4] Within the pharmacy, gas cartridges, some of them taped up, were found, together with a fire accelerant. The gas cartridges were prepared with steel balls so they would have caused greater damage in a detonation.[5] One gas cartridge was taped to the hostage, whom the perpetrator allegedly threatened to set on fire.[6] The perpetrator was reported to be shouting and confessing his ties to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), but such ties are still unconfirmed by the authorities. The current condition of Mohammad Abo R., who was seriously injured, is unclear.[7]

Legal proceedings

Police stated that they could not rule out a terror attack.[3][5] The Cologne prosecutor initiated investigation proceedings because of attempted murder and bodily injury.[8] On 16 October, the Public Prosecutor General took over investigations because there were "sufficient indications for a radical Islamist background."[9] Police inquiries are ongoing.[10]

Perpetrator

The perpetrator was named as Mohammad Abo R.,[11] a 55-year-old man of Arab, reportedly Syrian origin. He entered Europe during the peak of the European migrant crisis and was first intercepted by the authorities of the Czech Republic in early 2015. He filed an asylum application in the Czech Republic but then moved to Germany, where he filed an asylum application in March 2015. Under the Dublin Regulation, the German authorities should have expelled him to the Czech Republic, but they did not do so.[12][13] He was given permission to stay in Germany until 2021.[8]

It was reported that the perpetrator had been previously convicted of theft and threats. (Earlier reports of previous drug abuse convictions arose from confusion between the German words "Drogen" and "Drohen" which translates to “drugs” and “threaten” respectively.)[14] Abo R. was also reported to be a fraudster who took jewelry, cell phones, and money from his victims.[11] When his apartment was searched, religious messages were found on the walls, along with more fuel.[9] He was later charged with attempted murder and hostage-taking.[15]

Reactions

Cologne main station was completely locked down. Thousands of people, many travelers among them, gathered around the station.[3]
