The 2018 Dafabet Masters was a professional non-ranking snooker tournament that took place between 14 and 21 January 2018 in London, England, and the second Triple Crown event of the 2017/18 snooker season.[1] It was the 44th staging of the tournament, and was broadcast in Europe by the BBC and Eurosport.

The event saw two first time Triple Crown finalists. Mark Allen won his first Triple Crown event, defeating Kyren Wilson 10–7 in the final. Ronnie O'Sullivan was the defending champion, however, he lost 1–6 in the quarter-finals to the eventual champion, Mark Allen. It was O'Sullivan's first defeat at The Masters since 2015.

Tournament Summary

The 2018 Dafabet Masters saw the 16 highest ranked players in the Snooker world rankings compete, with no qualification round. Defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan was the number one seed, with remaining places being allocated to players based on the world rankings after the 2017 UK Championship.[2]

With Stuart Bingham, ranked 12th, suspended for betting breaches,{{refn|On 24 October 2017, Bingham was found guilty of breaking World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) rules on betting on matches involving himself and other players. He received a six month ban (of which, three months and one day were suspended) for betting breaches, and was also ordered to pay £20,000 in costs. The partial ban expired at the end of January 2018.|group=note}}[2][3][1] Liang Wenbo, ranked 17th, was invited in his stead.[2] Luca Brecel and Anthony McGill made their debuts at the 2018 Masters. Former Masters Champion Neil Robertson was notably absent; this was the first Masters without Robertson's participation since 2006.[4] Robertson would return to the event the following season.[5]

As in previous years, the top eight seeds were allocated fixed positions in the draw. The rest of the draw was made by drawing lots during the final of the 2017 UK Championship.[6]

First Round

The first round of the competition saw sixteen players take part, and was played between 14–17 January 2018. Defending champion, and top seed, Ronnie O'Sullivan whitewashed ninth seed Marco Fu 6–0, making three centuries during the match.[5] During the first four frames in total, O'Sullivan scored 477 points without reply and Fu had gained only five points due to a foul.[7]

Mark Williams won a match at the Masters for the first time in five years, coming from 3–5 behind to beat World Champion and World number one Mark Selby 6–5.[3] Playing in his first Masters tournament in eight years. The other Welshman in the draw, Ryan Day, came from 0–3 down to beat World number four and former Masters Champion, Ding Junhui, 6–4.[4]Shaun Murphy defeated Ali Carter by 6–4. Murphy led 4–0 but Carter won the next four frames to level. However, Murphy survived the comeback and won the next two frames for victory.[8] Former World Championship finalist Judd Trump defeated Liang Wenbo by a score of 6–4 in the first round.[9]Mark Allen safely reached the second round by defeating Masters debutant Luca Brecel by a score of six frames to three.[10] Kyren Wilson had his first victory in a Masters match after losing in the first round of his debut the year before. Wilson defeated former Masters finalist, Barry Hawkins, 6–4 in the first round of this edition of the tournament.[11]

Quarterfinals

The quarterfinals were played between 18–19 January 2018. Defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan (1) was knocked out of the tournament, at the quarter-finals stage, by Mark Allen 6–1.[12] After the match, O'Sullivan said that he was "glad" that he was out of the competition and that he had been feeling ill before the match.[12] However, O'Sullivan also revealed that he had been unwell for the whole tournament, including his whitewash of Marco Fu in the first round.[13] This was O'Sullivan's first loss at the event since the 2015 Masters.[12] After the match, Allen commented on the negative crowd reaction, saying that O'Sullivan fans changed his style of play.[14]

John Higgins defeated Ryan Day in the following quarter-final, with another score of 6–1.[15][16] Higgins would make a break of 83 in the opening frame, before Day won frame 2. Higgins would then take the next five frames with breaks of 61, 63, 65, 80 and 113 to win.[16] The third quarterfinal match saw Kyren Wilson defeat Mark Williams also by a scoreline of 6–1; with Wilson winning the first four frames, before Williams won frame 5. Wilson would take the next two frames with two centuries to win.[17][18]

The final quarterfinal saw Judd Trump defeat Shaun Murphy 6–4.[19][20] Trump made four 50+ breaks in the first six frames lead 4–2, before Murphy took the next two frames to tie the match 4–4. Trump would win the next two frames with breaks of 111, and 113 to win.[19] The quarterfinal saw a wasp land on the table during the match, disrupting play. Post-match, Murphy would admit to being afraid, saying he was "terrified of wasps, who isn't?"[19]

Semi-finals

The semifinals took place on 20 January — the penultimate day of the event. In the first semifinal, Kyren Wilson defeated Judd Trump 6–5 to reach his first Triple Crown final.[27] Trump would start the match with leads of 3–1 and later 5–2 thanks to breaks of 83, 96 and 69. Wilson would take both of the next two frames, and then a break of 107 to force a tiebreak, and tie 5–5.[27] Trump would be the first player to make a break in the final frame, before losing position after a break of 23, leaving Wilson in the balls, who made an "outstanding" break of 72 to win the match.[21]

In the second semifinal, Mark Allen reached his first Masters final by dispatching another former multiple World and Masters Champion, John Higgins, 6–3.[22] Allen made breaks of 63 and 90 before gaining a 3–1 lead at the mid-session interval. Frame 5 saw Higgins create a break of 131, which was Higgins' 700th career century break in competition, Allen would win the next two frames to lead 5–2, however.[22] Higgins would also score a second century in the match in frame 8 to trail 5–3, before Allen won the match in frame 9. Post-match, Higgins commented on the match, saying his tactical play was "very poor".[22]

Final

The final was played on 21 January 2019, over two sessions, in a best of 19-frame match. This final was the first Masters in which there were two first-time finalists since 1995 when O'Sullivan faced Higgins.[23] The event was won by Mark Allen (8) who defeated Wilson (13) 10–7.[6] Wilson and Allen would end the first session of the match tied at 4–4, and would also tie the match at 5–5.[24]

In frame 11, Allen would make a break of 73 to lead 6–5, and take a two-frame lead with a break of 119 in frame 12, and later lead 8–5.[24] Wilson would win the following two frames, to trail 8–7. Allen would win frames 16 and 17 with breaks of 69 and 71 respectively to win the tournament.[24] This was Allen's first major title after 14 years as a professional.[25][26]

Following the final, runner-up Wilson cried after receiving his runners-up medal.[27][28] He commented: "I just made things a bit too easy for Mark, you can't do that to a player of Mark's class, he's too good and he'll punish you. That's what he did tonight."[29]

Prize fund

The event received identical prize money to that of the previous year, with £200,000 for the winner, and £600,000 overall. The highest break prize of £10,000 was won by Liang Wenbo, for a break of 139.[30]
