The 2019–20 NIFL Premiership (known as the Danske Bank Premiership for sponsorship reasons) will be the 119th season of the Irish League overall and the seventh as the Northern Ireland Football League. The season will begin in August 2019 and will conclude in April 2020, with the play-offs for promotion/relegation and the Europa League then taking place in May 2020.

The winners will qualify for the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League, while the runners-up along with the play-off winners and the 2019–20 Irish Cup winners will qualify for the 2020–21 UEFA Europa League.

Teams

Twelve teams will compete in the 2019–20 NIFL Premiership, ten of which will have retained their Premiership status from the previous season. Larne were promoted to this season's Premiership as 2018–19 NIFL Championship winners.[1] This marked a return to the top flight for the first time in 11 years for the club, after they were relegated at the end of the 2007–08 season when they did not apply for a place in the newly-introduced Premiership for the following season.

Play-offs

UEFA Europa League play-offs

The four (potentially five) teams that finish in the play-off places (3rd–7th position) will participate in the Europa League play-offs to decide which team will qualify for the 2020–21 UEFA Europa League preliminary round.

However, the exact structure of the play-offs will depend on the outcome of the 2019–20 Irish Cup. There are four possible scenarios:

  • If the Irish Cup winners qualify for the Champions League as league winners: the Cup winners berth in the first qualifying round would be redistributed to the league runners-up, with the third-placed team then awarded the preliminary round berth originally reserved for second place. The four teams ranked from 4th-7th would then contest the play-offs. This scenario would also apply if the Cup winners do not hold a UEFA Club Licence, which would make them ineligible to participate in UEFA competitions.
  • If they finish as league runners-up: their original preliminary round berth for second place would be replaced with the first qualifying round berth as Cup winners, with the third-placed team then awarded the preliminary round berth. The four teams ranked from 4th-7th would then contest the play-offs.
  • If they finish in a Europa League play-off place: they would qualify for the Europa League first qualifying round as Cup winners, and would no longer be required to participate in the play-offs. The remaining four teams ranked from 3rd-7th would then contest the play-offs.
  • If they finish 8th or lower in the league: they would qualify for the Europa League first qualifying round as Cup winners (subject to holding a UEFA Club Licence). All five teams in 3rd–7th position would then contest the play-offs, with an extra quarter-final match required between the 6th and 7th-placed teams to decide which club joins the other three in the semi-finals.

NIFL Premiership play-offs

Pre-play-off

The runners-up and third-placed teams from the 2019–20 NIFL Championship will take part in the Championship promotion pre-play-off match, with the higher-ranked runners-up given home advantage. The winner of this play-off match will advance to the two-legged play-off against the eleventh-placed NIFL Premiership team, for a place in the 2020–21 NIFL Premiership. The pre-play-off match will take place in April/May 2020.

Play-off

The eleventh-placed Premiership team will play the winner of the pre-play-off over two legs for one spot in the 2020–21 NIFL Premiership, with the Premiership team given home advantage for the second leg. The matches will take place in May 2020.
