The 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship is a planned motor racing championship for Formula One cars which would be the 71st running of the Formula One World Championship. The championship is recognised by the governing body of international motorsport, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), as the highest class of competition for open-wheel racing cars. The championship is due to be contested over a series of Grands Prix with drivers and teams competing for the titles of World Drivers' Champion and World Constructors' Champion respectively.

Calendar expansion

After purchasing the commercial rights to the sport from CVC Capital Partners in January 2017, Liberty Media announced plans to expand the Formula One calendar using a concept they termed "destination races" and modelled on the Singapore Grand Prix.[33] Under the "destination races" model, Grands Prix would be established in or near key tourist destinations and integrate racing, entertainment and social functions with the aim of making the sport more accessible and appealing to a wider audience. Several countries and venues—including Autódromo Juan y Oscar Gálvez in Argentina and the Kymi Ring in Finland—announced plans to bid for a Grand Prix.[34][35]

  • The Vietnamese Grand Prix was announced as the first new race created under Liberty's management.[36] The race was given a provisional start date of April 2020 and is planned to take place on a street circuit in the capital Hanoi.[37]
  • Negotiations to revive the Dutch Grand Prix were revealed in late 2018,[38] with Circuit Zandvoort seeking a May 2020 date. Owners of the TT Circuit Assen announced plans to submit a separate bid if an agreement with Zandvoort fell through,[39] but this was abandoned to help secure funding for the Zandvoort proposal.[40]
  • Races at street circuits in Copenhagen and Miami were proposed, but plans were abandoned in the face of local opposition and insufficient funding.[41][42]

The planned expansion was the subject of criticism levelled at Liberty Media by the Formula One Promoters' Association (FOPA), an organisation representing race promoters, as part of a wider criticism of Liberty's management of the sport.[43] Race promoters expressed concern that Liberty Media was prioritising new Grands Prix without addressing the needs of existing events—many of whom were still under contracts negotiated with Bernie Ecclestone and the Formula One Group—and that the terms offered to proposed events amounted to a "free race".[44]
