The host of the awards ceremony was Sean Lau.[1] The state-owned China Central Television did not air the program as it had previously for every year since 1991; this was because the film nominated for best picture in the awards, Ten Years, was seen to be critical of China's influence over Hong Kong. The Chinese government was reported to have ordered the state broadcaster not to broadcast the ceremony.[2] AwardsWinners are listed first, highlighted in boldface, and indicated with a double dagger ({{double-dagger}}).[3] [4][5][6]
CensorshipThe Hong Kong Film Awards announced 21 film awards in all, but there were only 20 according to reports in the mainland Chinese news media. Major mainland news websites, including Sina and Tencent, which covered the awards ceremony on 3 April 2[7] 016 neglected to mention the winner of best picture, considered one of Asia's top film awards.[8][9] In mainland Chinese cities where TVB, the main Hong Kong television channel, is aired, users on social media reported that the programme was blacked out and replaced with a cooking programme.[7] References1. ^{{citation | title=Master of Ceremonies of 2016's Presentation Ceremony| url=http://hkfaa.com/news.html| language= Chinese}} 2. ^{{cite news|last1=Sala|first1=Ilaria Maria|title=Ten Years – the terrifying vision of Hong Kong that Beijing wants obscured|url=https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/11/ten-years-the-terrifying-vision-of-hong-kong-that-beijing-wants-obscured|work=The Guardian|date=11 March 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=List of Awardees of The 35th Hong Kong Film Awards|url=http://www.hkfaa.com/winnerlist35.html|publisher=Hong Kong Film Awards|accessdate=25 March 2017}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=The 35th Hong Kong Film Awards (2016)|url=http://award.mtime.com/17/2016/|publisher=Mtime.com Inc|accessdate=25 March 2017}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=The 35th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards|url=http://www.lovehkfilm.com/features/hkfa_2015.htm|publisher=Love HK Film|accessdate=25 March 2017}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Hong Kong Film Awards for 2016|url=https://www.imdb.com/event/ev0000329/2016|publisher=IMDB|accessdate=23 March 2017}} 7. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Wong|first1=Alan|title=China News Blackout as ‘Ten Years’ Takes Hong Kong Best Film Award|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/05/world/asia/hong-kong-china-film-award-ten-years.html?_r=0|publisher=The New York Times|accessdate=25 March 2017|date=4 April 2016}} 8. ^{{cite news|last1=Wu|first1=Venus|last2=Kwok|first2=Donny|title=Film depicting China's shadow over Hong Kong wins top Asian award|url=http://uk.reuters.com/article/us-china-film-tenyears-idUKKCN0X00VQ|agency=Reuters|date=3 April 2016}} 9. ^{{cite news|last1=Brzeski|first1=Patrick|last2=Chu|first2=Karen|title=Controversial Dystopian Movie 'Ten Years' Wins Best Picture at Hong Kong Film Awards|url=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/controversial-dystopian-movie-ten-years-880302|work=The Hollywood Reporter|date=3 April 2016}} External links
