It was developed by Edward J. Minskoff Equities. It is the headquarters of IBM's IBM Watson Group division. Like neighboring building Astor Place Tower, the black glass building designed by Fumihiko Maki was controversial for its architectural style[1] and nicknamed "The Death Star" by locals.[2] History51 Astor is a product of permission given to Cooper Union to allow development on its grounds despite being a non-profit. The building was built on spec, without an anchor tenant for the building.[3] The developer, Edward J. Minskoff, hoped to gain tenants from the financial and technology sectors.[4] The building was completed in 2013, and cost $300 million to construct. Usage51 Astor is a mixed-use building, with three retail spaces on the ground floor.[5] The anchor tenant is IBM. Others include St. John's University, Mail Online, 1stdibs.com, and a subsidiary of The Carlyle Group, Claren Road Asset Management.[6] DesignThe building was designed by Fumihiko Maki, who also designed 4 World Trade Center. The developer referred to the structure as "black glass with black granite and silver fins".[7] Matt Chaban, writing for Observer, referred to the building as the "one of the more interesting buildings built in the neighborhood since...41 Cooper Square...". 41 Cooper Square is a Cooper Union academic building.[8] The lobby includes a red Jeff Koons sculpture of a rabbit.[5] ControversyThe Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation opposed the building's development, largely due to the fact that the building's style is markedly different from that of the surrounding neighborhood.[1] Both the style and the high prices the building asks for rent have been seen as eroding the neighborhood's character.[1] The controversy over 51 Astor's design is similar to the one that faced the neighboring Astor Place Tower.[9] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://www.villagevoice.com/news/will-success-spoil-astor-place-6441322|title=Will Success Spoil Astor Place?|last=Weinstein|first=Steve|date=5 March 2014|publisher=The Village Voice|accessdate=18 April 2017}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.nybooks.com/daily/2018/03/07/the-death-and-life-of-a-great-american-building/|title=The Death and Life of a Great American Building|last=Moss|first=Jeremiah|date=2018-03-07|website=The New York Review of Books|language=en|access-date=2018-03-07}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://nypost.com/2015/04/28/ibm-deals-a-full-house-at-minskoffs-astor-place/|title=IBM deals a full house at Minskoff’s Astor Place|last=Cuozzo|first=Steve|date=28 April 2015|publisher=New York Post|accessdate=18 April 2017}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://ny.curbed.com/2011/6/8/10462722/work-on-glassy-astor-place-starbucks-crusher-starting-soon|title=Work on Glassy Astor Place Starbucks-Crusher Starting Soon|last=Polsky|first=Sara|date=8 June 2011|publisher=Curbed|accessdate=18 April 2017}} 5. ^1 {{cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/27/realestate/commercial/51-astor-place-rises-over-east-village.html|title=A Sleek Office Building Rises Over Gritty Astor Place|last=Hughes|first=C.J.|date=26 March 2013|publisher=The New York Times|accessdate=18 April 2017}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://rew-online.com/2014/04/09/51-astor-place-adds-media-finance-tenants/|title=51 Astor Place adds media, finance tenants|date=9 April 2014|publisher=REW|accessdate=18 April 2017}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://ny.curbed.com/2012/2/15/10396066/renderings-revealed-tenants-rumored-for-51-astor-place|title=Renderings Revealed, Tenants Rumored for 51 Astor Place|last=Polsky|first=Sara|date=12 February 2012|publisher=Curbed|accessdate=18 April 2017}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://observer.com/2012/02/now-we-get-it-minsikoffs-51-astor-may-be-new-yorks-strangest-new-building/|title=Now We Get It: Minsikoff’s 51 Astor May Be New York’s Strangest New Building|last=Chaban|first=Matt|date=15 February 2012|publisher=New York Observer|accessdate=18 April 2017}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2005/05/02/green-monster|title=Green Monster|last=Goldberger|first=Paul|date=2 May 2005|publisher=The New Yorker|accessdate=18 April 2017}} 2 : Skyscraper office buildings in Manhattan|Office buildings completed in 2013 |
