It features guest vocals from singer Ty Dolla Sign and rapper 2 Chainz.[3] The song was produced by Kanye West alongside Che Pope, Mike Dean and Eric Danchick, with co-production from Honorable C.N.O.T.E. and Charlie Heat. "Accelerate" became Aguilera's tenth number-one song on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. Background and releaseAfter the success of her fifth studio album, Lotus (2012), Christina Aguilera took a break and in 2014 announced she was expecting her second child with husband Matthew Rutler. In June 2016, Aguilera released "Change", a song about dedicated to the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting that at the time was announced as the lead-single of her upcoming eighth studio album by Billboard.[4] In the same year, Aguilera confirmed production by Pharrell Williams, revealing the album was almost done. However, in August 2016, Aguilera released "Telepathy", a song for the 2016 Netflix musical drama series The Get Down, included on the accompanying soundtrack of the same name.[5][6] In an interview for Paper magazine, in early 2018, Aguilera revealed that the album would only be released in summer 2018.[7] After teasing new music in May,[8] and hinting that the leak of her eighth album in the same month, the singer released "Accelerate" on May 3, 2018. It was simultaneously released to digital download on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon,[9] and streaming on Spotify, as well as YouTube.[10] The song also features guest vocals from rappers Ty Dolla Sign and 2 Chainz. Composition"Accelerate" was written by Christina Aguilera, Bibi Bourelly, Carlton Mays, Jr., Che Pope, Ernest Brown, Ilsey Juber, Kanye West, Kirby Lauren Dockery, Mike Dean, Ronald Brown, Tauheed Epps, Tayla Parx, Tyrone Griffin Jr and produced by Kanye West, Mike Dean and Che Pope.[11] The song is heavily influenced by trap music,[12] as well as dancehall,[13][14] having a dancehall beat.[12] It is also marked by clipped phrasing over a minimal beat[15] with trendy reggae vibes,[16] Afrobeat instrumental[17] and messy drum patterns.[18] The instrumentation also features collage of electronic beats and trap-infused rhythms.[12] Its sounds were compared to Fergie's "M.I.L.F. $", Iggy Azalea's "Kream", Christina's 2002 single "Can't Hold Us Down", songs heavily influenced by hip hop.[12][18] Christina uses a louder tone during the lines, "Baby, it's alright, Baby, it's OK/Spark round later, don't worry 'bout tomorrow (nah, nah, nah, nah)/I be with my ladies you can find me there/Try to play us, we gon' start a riot up in here."[23] A writer of the website Elite Daily compared her vocal styling to that of Ariana Grande.[19] During the chorus, she sings: "C'mon babe pick up your speed, stamina, fill me up, that's what I need."[23] Within the chorus, Aguilera hints at a more sexual connotation with playful, suggestive lyrics in the first two lines. Here, she is encouraging her love interest to “accelerate,” or go to faster during sex. Also, the subsequent stage of male ejaculation is indicated in a more blunt manner.[20]Lyrically, "Accelerate" talks the need for a lover to speed things up.[21] Critical receptionJon Caramanica of The New York Times called "Accelerate" "fantastically weird", stating, "Ty Dolla Sign's moans and yelps, sinuous keyboard lines, a charmingly staccato verse from 2 Chainz. Somewhere in there is Ms. Aguilera, under-singing and trying not to get pushed into a corner. And yet despite these disparate inputs, there's something loose and admirable happening here: everyone is trying new things, and the disarray verges on flamboyance."[22] According to MTV's Sam Prance, "Accelerate" is one of Aguilera's "most experimental releases to date," as well as "an instantly memorable pulsating club bop."[23] Billboard called the single "a stormy comeback" with high energy,[24] while The Guardian regarded it as catchy and a "promising comeback", noting Aguilera's "incredible" vocals.[25] The Fader praised Aguilera for "brave artistic choice" and assured that once you listen deeper into the song, its weirdest and most interesting sounds become "addictive".[26]Sheldon Pearce of Pitchfork said it is "certainly a liberation from something, though it's unclear what. There's a fun song (or two) trapped in here somewhere, between several mutations, but without any sort of constancy or meaningful direction, it isn't much of a song at all; it's a series of disjointed episodes with superfluous parts. 'Accelerate' is unnecessarily mixing and inflating ideas when far less would do."[27] Hugh McIntyre, a contributor to Forbes.com, was critical of the song, saying "'Accelerate' sounds like it's headed somewhere, but it never actually arrives. The track is disappointingly one-note, and once you've heard what it has to give in the first few seconds, there isn't a lot more to discover. The drum-heavy production immediately catches the ear, but it never develops and grows, and there's no powerful hook that requires a replay".[28] Chart performanceIn the United States, the song peaked at number twenty-four on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles. Elsewhere, the song had minor chart success, reaching the top ten in Spain. In UK and Canada, the song charted on the digital sales component charts in each country. "Accelerate" became Aguilera's tenth number-one song on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. Music videoOn May 3, 2018, Aguilera uploaded the music video for "Accelerate" on her YouTube and Vevo account.[29] The music video was directed by Zoey Grossman.[30] The video of the single was shot in black-and-white and, as stated by Nathan Diller of Bustle, "The mostly black-and-white clip is similarly minimalistic, save the occasional glitchy camera effect, and features Aguilera looking fresh-faced, intercut with close-ups of glittery lipstick and a haunting shot of the musician drenched in what looks like wax."[31] In a statement, Aguilera wrote about the video: "I've always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a storyline and play a character in a video or through stage, I'm a performer, that's who I am by nature. But I'm at the place, even musically, where it's a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty."
