HistoryThe project was undertaken by the Soviet Union under a cooperation agreement with Nigeria. In 1967, Soviet experts recommended prospecting for iron ore in Nigeria, as the known deposits were of poor quality for steelmaking. In 1973, iron ore of the required quality was discovered in Itakpe, Ajabanoko, and Oshokoshoko. The Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited was incorporated in 1979, and the steel mill reached 98% completion in 1994.[2] To supply the Ajaokuta Steel Mill with raw materials and connect it with the world market, a contract was awarded in 1987 for the construction of Nigeria's first standard gauge railway, from the iron mines at Itakpe to the steel mill at Ajaokuta and continuing to the Atlantic Ocean at Warri.[3] However, both projects have been mismanaged. The Ajaokuta Steel Mill has not produced a single sheet of steel after three decades, although 40 of the 43 plants at the facility had been completed.[2] After several failed attempts at privatisation, the Nigerian government took back control in 2016.[4] The Itakpe–Warri Railway fell into disrepair, and part of the track was vandalised. In 2016, the Nigerian government awarded contracts to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and Julius Berger to repair and complete the railway.[3] Test runs began in November 2018.[5] References1. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Robson|first1=Lorna|title=Nigeria|date=2005|publisher=Evans Brothers|location=London|isbn=9780237527563|page=27}} 2. ^1 2 3 {{cite news|last1=Oluyole|first1=Francisca|title=How Nigeria's Largest Industrial Project Failed|url=http://allafrica.com/stories/201712270020.html|work=Premium Times (Abuja)|date=26 December 2017}} 3. ^1 {{cite news|title=Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri rail line to start operation in June 2018 - Rotimi Amaechi|url=https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/08/itakpe-ajaokuta-warri-rail-line-start-operation-june-2018-minister/|work=Vanguard News|date=7 August 2017}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=Ownership crisis ends, Nigeria retakes Ajaokuta Steel Company|url=https://www.premiumtimesng.com/business/business-news/207927-ownership-crisis-ends-nigeria-retakes-ajaokuta-steel-company.html|work=Premium Times Nigeria|date=1 August 2016}} 5. ^{{cite news |last1=Ejike |first1=Ejike |title=Itakpe Train Service Begins Operation Today |url=https://leadership.ng/2018/11/26/itakpe-train-service-begins-operation-today/ |work=Leadership |date=26 November 2018}} External links
