Dr Akinola Maja was a Nigerian medical doctor, businessman, philanthropist and politician who was president of the Nigerian Youth Movement from 1944 to 1951 and later became president of Egbe Omo Oduduwa in 1953.

Commonly known as Baba Eko which translates to Father of Lagos.

A medical doctor by training, he graduated in 1918 from University of Edinburgh and stayed in U.K. for the next three years before returning to Nigeria in 1921. He briefly worked for the colonial government before going into private practice to set up his own clinic.

Dr Akinola Maja was born Sope Akinola Pearce, his father James Adaramaja Pearce was a carpenter, his mother was a bread seller. The popular road Breadfruit street was named so because of her. His father died young and he was picked as the one child to look after the family. His mother saved enough money to send him to school overseas to UK.

Akinola rebelled against British imperialism whilst at university in Scotland when he felt racially abused. He had excelled academically and was due to be awarded a prize for best student at the graduation ceremony. You can imagine the discomfort of the white audience upon discovering the all round best student was not actually British as his surname Pearce suggested but was actually a Nigerian. He was made to wait for it to be confirmed that indeed he was the recipient of the prize. He immediately renounced his British surname and shortened his father's middle name Adaramaja to Maja as his new surname. He also took an oath that none of his children or descendants should have British names, a tradition which is still carried on today by the male members of the Maja family.

In 1933, Dr Akinola Maja was one of the founders of National Bank of Nigeria, along with T.A. Doherty, Olatunde Johnson and Hamzat Subair.
