He completed his doctorate in 1974 at the University of Bristol.[1] Research and careerTurnbull joined the Materials Division of the National Physical Laboratory in 1973, becoming a Fellow in 1989 and a Senior Fellow in 2011.[1] He has developed integrated models for the generation, diffusion and trapping of hydrogen atoms in metals. Hydrogen accumulation modifies the properties of metals and can result in fracture. By controlling this process, engineers can reduce the likelihood of failure and extend the operating lifetime of metal systems used in oil and gas applications, power generation and hydrogen gas transport.[2] He has authored eight international industry standards.[2] Awards and honoursTurnbull has received awards from the Institute of Corrosion, the European Federation of Corrosion and NACE International.[1][2] He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2011 and a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2013.[2][3] In 2016, he was appointed Order of the British Empire for services to science and industry.[4][5] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{Who's Who | surname = Turnbull | othernames = Alan | id=U258318 | year = 2017|author=Anon| doi =10.1093/ww/9780199540884.013.258318 | edition = online | access-date=2017-12-17 }} {{subscription required}} {{FRS 2013}}{{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Turnbull, Alan}}2. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{cite web|author=Anon|year=2013|url=https://royalsociety.org/people/alan-turnbull-12445|title=Alan Turnbull|publisher=Royal Society|location=London}} One or more of the preceding sentences may incorporate text from the royalsociety.org website where "all text published under the heading 'Biography' on Fellow profile pages is available under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License." {{Cite web |url=https://royalsociety.org/about-us/terms-conditions-policies/ |title=Archived copy |access-date=2017-12-22 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170710134855/https://royalsociety.org/about-us/terms-conditions-policies/ |archive-date=2017-07-10 |dead-url=bot: unknown |df= }}, "Intellectual property rights" 3. ^{{cite web |url=https://collections.royalsociety.org/DServe.exe?dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqCmd=Show.tcl&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqPos=0&dsqSearch=%28RefNo%3D%27EC%2F2013%2F38%27%29 |title = EC/2013/38: Turnbull, Alan|publisher=The Royal Society|accessdate=22 December 2017|author=Anon|year=2013}} 4. ^{{cite web | title=Alan TURNBULL - Order of the British Empire | website=The Gazette | date=2015-12-31 | url=https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/2454296 | access-date=2017-12-22}} 5. ^{{cite web | title=Alan Turnbull awarded OBE in New Year's Honours : News : News + Events : National Physical Laboratory | website=National Physical Laboratory | date=2016-01-04 | url=http://www.npl.co.uk/news/alan-turnbull-awarded-obe-in-new-years-honours | access-date=2017-12-22}} 9 : 1949 births|Living people|British materials scientists|Fellows of the Royal Society|Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering|Members of the Order of the British Empire|Alumni of the University of Strathclyde|Alumni of the University of Bristol|Scientists of the National Physical Laboratory |
