He held the seat until 1847 when he was defeated at that year's election. In 1856, he became High Sheriff of County Cork before returning to parliament for the county as an Independent Irish Party MP at the 1857 general election and held the seat until 1859; at that year's general election, he unsuccessfully fought Dublin City as a Liberal.[4][5][1] References1. ^1 {{cite web |title=McCarthy Monument, Blackroad Road |url=http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/mapsimages/corkphotographs/michaelolearycollection/mccarthymonument/ |website=Cork Past and Present .IE |publisher=Cork City Council |accessdate=30 September 2018}} 2. ^{{cite news |title=Cork County |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000433/18570320/052/0002 |accessdate=30 September 2018 |work=Dublin Evening Mail |date=20 March 1857 |page=2 |via = British Newspaper Archive|subscription=yes}} 3. ^{{cite news |title=Dublin Weekly Nation |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001424/18570404/031/0007 |accessdate=30 September 2018 |date=4 April 1857 |page=7 |via = British Newspaper Archive|subscription=yes}} 4. ^{{cite book|editor1-last=Walker|editor1-first=B.M.|title=Parliamentary Election Results in Ireland, 1801-1922|date=1978|publisher=Royal Irish Academy|location=Dublin|isbn=978-0901714121|pages=263–266, 271}} 5. ^{{cite web |last1=Rayment |first1=Leigh |title=The House of Commons: Constituencies beginning with "C" |url=http://www.leighrayment.com/commons/Ccommons5.htm |website=Leigh Rayment's Peerage Page |accessdate=30 September 2018 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20180930094722/http://www.leighrayment.com/commons/Ccommons5.htm|archivedate=30 September 2018 |date=25 July 2018 |dead-url=no}} External links
