| image = | image_size = | caption = | birth_name = Alfred Bernstein | birth_date = 1911 | birth_place = | death_date = February 28, 2003 (age 92) | death_place = Washington, D.C. | death_cause = stroke | nationality = American | education = | home_town = | residence = | spouse = Sylvia Walker | known_for = | occupation = Civil rights activist | children = 3 including Carl Bernstein | parents = | family = }}Alfred Bernstein (1911–2003) was an American civil rights and union activist.[1] BiographyBernstein was raised in New York City and is a graduate of Columbia University Law School.[1] In 1937, he moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked as an investigator for the Senate Commerce Committee's inquiry into the railroad industry then under scrutiny.[1] While conducting investigations, he observed how poorly government workers, especially blacks, were treated.[1] From 1937 to 1950, he was an official of the United Federal Workers of America[1] and lived in San Francisco where he was an investigator with the Office of Price Administration.[1] In the 1940s, he and his wife were members of the Communist party and per his son, Carl Bernstein, were persecuted by the government.[2] During World War II, he served in the Army in the Pacific theater.[1] Later, he served as a fundraiser for the Eleanor Roosevelt Institute for Cancer Research and the Union of Hebrew Congregations before joining the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1960 where he served until 1985 as vice president for development.[1] He was an active opponent of Harry S.
