It was first published in serial form in Today.[2] The title comes from Browning’s poem Waring.[3] PlotThe novel is set in Scotland during the Jacobite rising of 1745 and follows the adventures of Francis Birkenshaw, an eighteen-year-old law apprentice. It is a study of the romantic temperament and of conflicts of loyalty.[2] Critical receptionDavid Daniell, in The Interpreter's House (1975), calls the novel "the story of romantic defeat, a gallant fanaticism that ended in dull retreat instead of ringing death. There is a nice decorum in the control of the material all through…". He considers that Buchan has been able to "get the darker shades moving in and out of his hero with some success".[4] Andrew Lownie, in John Buchan: The Presbyterian Cavalier (2013) notes that this is a more ambitious and complex book than Buchan had previously attempted, and that perhaps as a result is less successful. He considers it to have been a victim of its long and spasmodic gestation, and of Buchan's busy lifestyle.[2] References1. ^1 2 {{Cite web |url=http://primocat.bl.uk/F?func=direct&local_base=ITEMV&doc_number=000512709&con_lng=eng |title=British Library Item details |website=primocat.bl.uk |access-date=21 September 2018}} 2. ^1 2 {{Cite book |title= John Buchan: The Presbyterian Cavalier |last=Lownie |first= Andrew |publisher= Thistle Publishing |year=2013 |isbn=978-1-909609-99-0 |pages=49–50}} 3. ^{{Cite book |title=The Interpreter's House |last=Daniell |first=David |publisher= Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd |year=1975 |isbn=0 17 146051 0 |page=62}} 4. ^{{Cite book |title=The Interpreter's House |last=Daniell |first=David |publisher= Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd |year=1975 |isbn=0 17 146051 0 |page=66}} External links
