ApplicationResponding to Iran's request for extradition of the Shah of Iran Muhammad Reza Pahlavi, the President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, provided for the Shah's travel plans to Panama with the deliberate intention of eliminating the possibility of the extradition in exchange for hostages who were held by the revolutionary Iran for 444 days (November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981) after a group of Iranian revolutionary students affiliated with Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line broke into and entered the Embassy of the United States of America in Tehran, and took its diplomatic staff hostage, in contravention of international law, in response to the US providing political asylum for the Shah.[3][4] A week after the incident, the sheets and finances of Iran were confiscated by US{{clarify|date=February 2016}}. Yet, in spite of what were deemed by Iran to be international threats, there was still the possibility of holding trials for alleged American spies, and the reaction of Ayatollah Khomeini against the threat of Carter{{clarify|date=February 2016}} published regularly by international media, was the slogan "America can't do a damn thing against us."[4] The slogan appeared on many walls and banners such as a billboard along the Iran-Iraq border, a banner which was hung in front of the U.S captured RQ-170 drone and a banner above which Ali Khamenei was speaking at an event commemorating the 25th anniversary Khamenei.{{clarify|date=February 2016}}[1][2][5] The slogan was also used by Khamenei, Khomeini's successor, while speaking to teachers on Teacher's Day in Iran,[6] and on other several occasions.[7][8] It was also used by some other Iranian officials.[9][10][11] References1. ^1 {{cite book|last=Limbert|first=John W.|title=Negotiating with Iran: Wrestling the Ghosts of History|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=bihEK0FJxaAC&pg=PA170|year=2009|publisher=US Institute of Peace Press|isbn=978-1-60127-043-6|pages=170–}} 2. ^1 {{cite news|last1=Clawson|first1=Patrick|title=Iran Can't Agree to a Damn Thing|url=https://foreignpolicy.com/2013/02/20/iran-cant-agree-to-a-damn-thing/|accessdate=30 January 2016|work=Foreign Policy|date=20 February 2013}} 3. ^{{cite book|last1=Chalk|first1=Peter|title=Encyclopedia of Terrorism (2 volume set)|date=2012|publisher=ABC-CLIO|isbn=978-0313308956|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=czK7lIU7m1oC&pg=PT1000&lpg=PT1000&dq=were+held+hostage+for+444+days+November+4,+1979,+to+January+20,+1981)+after+a+group+of+Iranian+students+belonging+to+the+Muslim+Student+Followers+of+the+Imam%27s+Line+who+supported+the+Iranian+Revolution,+took+over+the+U.S.+Embassy+in+Tehran&source=bl&ots=wEabWf9qJF&sig=qD8t3TRMGae2xvupEVgvRtqG1RA&hl=fa&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjPwqa40fbKAhUDGZoKHbSPChMQ6AEIOjAF#v=onepage&q=were%20held%20hostage%20for%20444%20days%20(November%204%2C%201979%2C%20to%20January%2020%2C%201981)%20after%20a%20group%20of%20Iranian%20students%20belonging%20to%20the%20Muslim%20Student%20Followers%20of%20the%20Imam's%20Line%20who%20supported%20the%20Iranian%20Revolution%2C%20took%20over%20the%20U.S.%20Embassy%20in%20Tehran&f=false}} 4. ^1 {{cite news | url=http://www.magiran.com/ppdf/nppdf/2827/p02827211700061.pdf | title=Firm responses to void threats - Imam Khomeini said: America can't do a damn thing against us. | work=Kayhan | date=30 September 2015 | accessdate=1 February 2016}} 5. ^{{cite news|last1=Pow|first1=Helen|title='America cannot do a damn thing': Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei taunts President Obama claiming he doesn't have the guts for a military attack|url=http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2649625/America-damn-thing-Irans-supreme-leader-Ayatollah-Ali-Khamenei-claims-President-Obama-doesnt-guts-military-attack-speech.html|accessdate=30 January 2016|work=Daily Mail}} 6. ^{{cite news|last1=Winer|first1=Stuart|title=Khamenei to US: Your military ‘can't do a damn thing' to us|url=http://www.timesofisrael.com/iran-leader-puts-kibosh-on-talks-under-us-threat-of-attack/|accessdate=30 January 2016|work=Times of Israel}} 7. ^{{cite web|last1=Staff|title=America can't do a damn thing|language=fa|url=http://farsi.khamenei.ir/audio-content?id=29938|website=KHAMENEI.IR|accessdate=31 January 2016}} 8. ^{{cite news|last1=Karami|first1=Arash|title=Khamenei: Iran rejected US offer to cooperate against IS|url=http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2014/09/iran-rejects-us-offer-cooperate-is.html|accessdate=31 January 2016|work=Al-Monitor}} 9. ^{{cite news|title=Iran: Obama 'can't do a damn thing'|url=http://www.nbcnews.com/id/36212348/ns/world_news-mideast_n_africa/t/iran-obama-cant-do-damn-thing/|accessdate=31 January 2016|work=NBC news|agency=Associated Press}} 10. ^{{cite news|last1=Staff|title=Ahmadinejad: U.S. Can't Do "Damn Thing" on Nukes|url=http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ahmadinejad-us-cant-do-damn-thing-on-nukes/|accessdate=31 January 2016|work=CBS News}} 11. ^{{cite news|last1=Staff|title=Only Iran is confronting Islamic State, paramilitary chief says|url=https://www.reuters.com/article/mideast-crisis-iraq-iran-idUSL5N0YG0MK20150525?rpc=401|accessdate=31 January 2016|work=Reuters}} External links
