Amy Louise Billings[1] (born 14 May 1986), known by her stage name Amy Shark, is an ARIA award-winning Australian indie pop singer-songwriter and producer from the Gold Coast, Queensland. She is best known for her 2016 single "Adore", which was voted in at number 2 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016. Her debut album Love Monster debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart.

Early life

Shark was born and raised on the Gold Coast and attended Southport State High School throughout her teenage years.[2] After high school she met Shane Billings, a New Zealand-born Gold Coast resident whom she married on 11 May 2013.[3] The couple are residents of Broadbeach Waters.

She has been active as a musician on YouTube since 2014.[4]

Career

2014-2018: Early years and Night Thinker

{{Main|Night Thinker}}

In 2016, Shark won Pop Song of the Year at the Queensland Music Awards for her track "Golden Fleece", and embarked on a nationwide tour.[5]

In July 2016, She released her single "Adore", with production assistance from M-Phazes and Cam Bluff,[6] in addition to a cover of Silverchair's "Miss You Love" for Like a Version.[7]

"Adore" received significant airplay on Triple J, which lead to a bidding war between the major labels, which was ultimately won by Sony Music Australia, with whom Shark signed in November 2016. She said “After meeting with the Wonderlick team and Denis Handlin at Sony, I felt right at home. I am so excited to now focus all my energy on my music.”[8]

In January 2017, Shark became one of two frontrunners to take out first place in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016, alongside Flume's "Never Be like You";[9] it was later voted in second place.[10][11] In March, She released "Weekends" followed by her debut extended play Night Thinker which peaked at number 2 on the ARIA Charts. In April 2017 she won Artist of the Year and Song of the Year at the Gold Coast Music Awards.[12] In early November 2017, She was named Apple's next Apple Music UpNext artist,[13] and on 15 November 2017 she was featured on The Late Late Show with James Corden performing her song "Adore" which she performed again on 13 March 2018 on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In March 2018, She contributed the song "Sink In" to the Love, Simon soundtrack.[14] The soundtrack debuted at 37 on the Billboard 200.

2018–present: Love Monster

{{main|Love Monster (album)}}

On 11 April 2018, Shark premiered a single called "I Said Hi" on Triple J before releasing the track the following day.[15] It was voluntarily promoted by comedian and digital radio show hosts Luke and Lewis using posters, megaphone and a large homemade sign hung up next to the Fox FM Melbourne station logo.[16] This captured the attention of the singer-songwriter who promoted it on her own Instagram.[17][18] Her debut album, Love Monster, was released on 13 July 2018.[19]

In April 2018 she performed at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony on the Gold Coast with Archie Roach.
