Built in 1907 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, the farm is an example of early 20th century family dairy farming in the Snoqualmie River Valley.[2] HistoryFor nearly a hundred years, Hjertoos Farm was associated with the Hjertoos family, Norwegian immigrants who settled in the valley in the 1890s. They established their farm at the confluence of the Tolt River and Snoqualmie River.[2] The farm consists of a well-preserved 1907 farmhouse, a large dairy barn built in 1910, a milkhouse, and 24 acres of agricultural land. The farmhouse is a two-story wood frame structure with a hipped roof and hipped roof dormers, and a hipped roof porch in the rear which has been enclosed.[2] The original two-story front porch was removed in the 1950s, then recreated from old family photographs in 1980s.[3] The dairy barn, unusually large for its time at 40' by 94', was a modern showpiece when built in 1910 with a concrete foundation and flooring, and a full hayloft with an unusual system of distinctive diagonal roof braces. Dimensional lumber, new at the time, was used in its construction.[2] The farm was originally 208 acres; sections of land were sold or donated for the use of Tolt High School, the IOOF Hall, and Tolt River Park.[4] Recent changesThe farm was operated as a dairy farm until 1954.[5] In 1978, the owner (great-grandson of Andrew and Bergette Hjertoos) planted a tree farm.[3] As Carnation Tree Farm, the property has 16 acres of Douglas fir, Fraser fir, Grand fir, Noble fir, Nordmann fir, Norway, and Blue Spruce trees which customers can cut themselves.[6] In 2018, the Tolt-Carnation Historical Museum was moved from the nearby Carnation Farm to a permanent location in the Hjertoos farmhouse.[4][7] References1. ^{{NRISref|version=2013a}} 2. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|url={{NRHP url|id=02000248}}|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Hjertoos, Andrew and Bergette, Farm |publisher=National Park Service|author= |date= |accessdate=February 4, 2019}} With {{NRHP url|id=02000248|photos=y|title=accompanying pictures}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |title=Restoring A Family's Heritage -- Carnation Man Completes 18-Year Project To Rebuild Tattered Ancestral Farm House |url=http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19970814&slug=2554637 |website=The Seattle Times |accessdate=4 February 2019}} 4. ^1 {{cite web |title=Tolt Museum moving to historic Hjertoos house |url=http://www.nwnews.com/index.php/valley-view/16438-tolt-museum-moving-to-historic-hjertoos-house |website=The Woodinville Weekly}} 5. ^{{cite web |title=County awards eastside historic grants |url=https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/county-awards-eastside-historic-grants/ |website=The Seattle Times}} 6. ^{{cite web |title=Carnation Tree Farm |url=https://www.pscta.org/place/carnation-tree-farm/ |website=Puget Sound Christmas Tree Association |accessdate=4 February 2019}} 7. ^{{cite web |last1=Semet |first1=Lauren |title=#heywefundedthat: the Tolt Historical Society Heads Home for the Holidays |url=https://www.4culture.org/heywefundedthat-tolt-historical-society/ |website=4Culture |accessdate=4 February 2019}} External links
