He made his way through the Auckland club rugby scene and was named man of the match as his side, Grammar TEC lifted the Gallaher Shield in 2015. Unable to crack the {{rut Auckland}} Mitre 10 Cup team, he headed south to play for Marlborough based side Harlequins in 2016.[4] Senior careerMakalio's move south proved to be a fruitful one as after just one season in Marlborough club rugby, he was chosen to replace the departing Quentin MacDonald in the Tasman Makos squad for the 2016 Mitre 10 Cup. He instantly established himself as the first choice in the number 2 jersey, making 11 appearances, 10 of them from the start and scoring 2 tries as the Makos finished as Premiership runners up in 2016.[5] Super RugbyAfter just one full season and 11 appearances at provincial level, he was handed a Super Rugby contract by the {{rut Crusaders}} ahead of the 2017 Super Rugby season. The move would see him compete for the number 2 jersey with {{rut Canterbury}} hookers Codie Taylor and Ben Funnell.[1] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://files.allblacks.com/comms/2016-ISR/2017_ISR_Squad_Naming_Crusaders-PUBLISHED-01.pdf |title=Crusaders 2017 Squad Guide |publisher=All Blacks.com |accessdate=4 November 2016 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/6lhaH0K6Y?url=http://files.allblacks.com/comms/2016-ISR/2017_ISR_Squad_Naming_Crusaders-PUBLISHED-01.pdf |archivedate=1 November 2016 }} {{Crusaders squad}}{{Tasman Mitre 10 Cup squad}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Makalio, Andrew}}2. ^{{cite web | url=http://crusaders.co.nz/the-team/ben-volavola | title=Andrew Makalio Crusaders Player Profile | publisher=Crusaders Rugby | accessdate=21 December 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.makos.co.nz/tasman-makos/andrew-makalio | title=Andrew Makalio Tasman Makos Player Profile | publisher=Makos Rugby | accessdate=4 November 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.makos.co.nz/news/meet-andrew-makalio | title=Meet Andrew Makalio | publisher=Makos Rugby | date = 13 September 2016 | accessdate=4 November 2016}} 5. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.itsrugby.co.uk/player_38386.html | title=Andrew Makalio itsrugby Player Statistics | publisher=it's rugby | accessdate=4 November 2016}} 7 : 1992 births|Living people|New Zealand rugby union players|Rugby union hookers|Tasman Mako players|Rugby union players from Auckland|People educated at Onehunga High School |
