Ann Teresa Mathews (religious name, Sister Mary Aloysia; 1732- 18 June, 1800) was an American nun who created the first Roman Catholic convent in the United States.

Biography

Mathews (sometimes spelled "Matthews") was born to a Catholic family in Maryland. She had a sister, Susanna Mathews (Sister Mary Eleanor) and an aunt, Ann Mathews (Mother Bernardine of St. Joseph).[1]

She left for Belgium in 1754 to join the English-speaking Discalced Carmelites convent at Hoogstraet. She eventually was elected prioress of this convent in 1771.[2] In 1790, amidst the increasing anxieties surrounding the French Revolution in Europe, and the news of the American Revolution, Mathews received an offer from a Father Charles Neale of farmland to build a convent in Port Tobacco, Maryland.[3][4] She helped establish the convent—the first for Catholic women in America—and for fourteen years was its prioress.[5]
