Ann Teresa Mathews (religious name, Sister Mary Aloysia; 1732- 18 June, 1800) was an American nun who created the first Roman Catholic convent in the United States. BiographyMathews (sometimes spelled "Matthews") was born to a Catholic family in Maryland. She had a sister, Susanna Mathews (Sister Mary Eleanor) and an aunt, Ann Mathews (Mother Bernardine of St. Joseph).[1] She left for Belgium in 1754 to join the English-speaking Discalced Carmelites convent at Hoogstraet.
