{{Use dmy dates|date=May 2018}}{{Use Indian English|date=May 2018}}Anuraag Saxena is an Indian activist, author and commentator. He is a founder of India Pride Project,[1] a volunteer led effort to bring back India’s stolen heritage.[2]

Personal life

Anuraag Saxena is a Singapore-based activist[3] of Indian descent. In an interview to The Hindu, Anuraag credits Timpany School in Visakhapatnam, and says, "I guess I’m a living proof of the positive impact a school can make on an average child."[4]

Activism

The Antiquities Coalition reports that Indian heritage and antiquities are illegally procured and sold around the world.[5] Anuraag founded the India Pride Project as a response.[6] Anuraag focuses on restitutions, advocacy and awareness-building programs to bring back India’s stolen heritage.{{fact|date=May 2018}}

An online petition #BringOurGodsHome garnered thousands of signatures from across the world.[7] In an interview with US Department of State magazine SPAN, Saxena said, When I started the online petition, I only expected a bit of crowd-sourced action. I never imagined it would grow into a movement. I’m thankful we have a digitally-connected prime minister who has clearly taken notice.[8]

An official Government of India Press Release states that United States, Germany, Australia, Canada and Singapore have returned stolen Indian heritage located in their country.[9] U.S. Bill, H.R.2285,[10] for ensuring cultural heritage restoration, sponsored by Representative William R. Keating[11] tabled in September 2016, passed unanimously with bipartisan support. It’s a great example of how politicians can rally behind this issue, says Saxena.[8]

Press & Media Coverage

Washington Post, featured Anuraag Saxena and his project as an example of India's emerging geo-political influence; and said "That countries such as China and India are taking new pride in their history and national heritage is only natural, given their growing economic and political clout."[12]

He has been featured on BBC,[13] Doordarshan,[14] Times of India,[15] Man's World,[16] Better India,[17] The Hindu,[18] Antiquities Coalition,[5] and Organiser.[19]

His work has been covered by American Government publication SPAN.[8]

He has been invited to speak at Universities and Conferences globally.[20][21]

Controversies

In July 2017, online magazine The Print alleged, "the group is ideologically driven" and alleged communal motives,[22] and later refused to publish an unedited rebuttal that was published elsewhere.[23] After a public backlash on their misreporting, The Print issued a statement saying "It does not doubt the expertise or intentions of Anuraag Saxena and his team."[24]

Contribution to lexicography and narrative

Anuraag Saxena coined the phrase "Blood Buddhas"[25] as a descriptor of the global illicit-heritage industry. He is also credited with social media initiatives like, #BringOurGodsHome[7] and #SaveOurGods.[26]
