The company was founded in 2012, but operated in stealth mode until 2014.[4] AppLovin is headquartered in Palo Alto, California.[5] HistoryThe company was founded in 2012 by Adam Foroughi, John Krystynak, and Andrew Karam,[6] and was reportedly named by Foroughi's after the McLovin character from the film Superbad.[7] The company operated in stealth mode until 2014. During this time, the company raised $4 million in financing from angel investors, Streamlined Ventures and the Webb Investment Network,[5] and focused on developing its product. Before emerging from stealth mode, AppLovin acquired customers including companies like Opentable and Spotify.[8][9] In October 2014, AppLovin purchased the German mobile ad-network, Moboqo.[10] On September 26, 2016, it was reported that AppLovin had agreed to be acquired by the Chinese private equity firm, Orient Hontai Capital, for $1.42 billion; the acquisition deal was subsequently abandoned for debt investment after opposition to the plans from CFIUS.[11][12][13] The convertible note facility that AppLovin received from Hontai Capital was fully refinanced In August 2018, after AppLovin raised a significant credit facility from U.S.-based investors. Hontai retain a small equity stake in AppLovin.[14][15] In July of 2018, AppLovin launched Lion Studios, an independent media division of AppLovin that works with mobile developers to publish and promote their games.[16][17] In 2016, the company was ranked #10 on the Deloitte Fast 500 North America list.[18] References1. ^{{cite web|title=AppLovin on Forbes America's Most Promising Companies List|url=https://www.forbes.com/companies/applovin/|publisher=Forbes|accessdate=26 September 2016}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.inc.com/profile/applovin?cid=full500016-list-68|title=AppLovin|publisher=Inc.|access-date=16 October 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/print-edition/2015/05/22/tech-award-best-ad-tech-applovin-adam-foroughi.html|title=AppLovin is on Fire With $210 Million Run-Rate|publisher=San Francisco Business Times|first=Sean |last=Anderson|date=22 May 2015|access-date=16 October 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.businessinsider.com/applovin-reaches-200-million-run-rate-2015-3|title=One Simple Rule Got This Startup to $200 Million in Annual Revenue in Less Than Three Years|publisher=Business Insider|first=Eugene |last=Kim|date=12 March 2015|access-date=16 October 2016}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/blog/techflash/2016/09/fast-growing-silicon-valley-ad-tech-startup-sells.html|title=Fast Growing Silicon Valley Ad Tech Startup Sells At 'Unicorn' Valuation|publisher=Silicon Valley Business Journal|first=Cromwell |last=Schubarth|date=26 September 2016|access-date=16 October 2016}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.forbes.com/companies/applovin/|title= AppLovin|publisher=Forbes|access-date=16 October 2016}} 7. ^{{cite web|last1=Ha|first1=Anthony|title=Mobile Ad Startup AppLovin Says It Has Reached A $100M Revenue Run Rate|url=https://techcrunch.com/2014/07/31/applovin-100-million/|publisher=TechCrunch|accessdate=26 September 2016}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.businessinsider.com/applovin-mobile-ad-startup-may-be-acquired-2016-8|title=AppLovin Could Soon Be Selling Itself for $1.5 Billion|publisher=Business Insider|first=Julie |last=Bort|date=26 August 2016|access-date=16 October 2016}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=https://venturebeat.com/2014/06/04/mobile-marketer-applovin-emerges-from-stealth-with-300-customers-exclusive/|title=Mobile Marketer AppLovin Emerges From Stealth With 300 Customers|publisher=VentureBeat|first=Richard |last=Byrne Reilly|date=4 June 2014|access-date=16 October 2016}} 10. ^{{cite web|url= https://techcrunch.com/2014/10/09/applovin-acquires-moboqo/|title=Mobile Ad Startup AppLovin Acquires German Ad Network Moboqo|publisher=TechCrunch|first=Anthony |last=Ha|date=9 October 2014|access-date=16 October 2016}} 11. ^{{cite news|last1=Baker|first1=Liana B.|title=Exclusive: AppLovin tweaks Chinese takeover deal after U.S. pushback|url=https://www.reuters.com/article/us-applovin-m-a-hontaicapital-exclusive/exclusive-applovin-tweaks-chinese-takeover-deal-after-u-s-pushback-idUSKBN1DL2N3|agency=Reuters|publisher=Reuters}} 12. ^{{cite web|title=Exclusive: AppLovin to Be Acquired by Chinese Investor for $1.4 Billion|url=http://fortune.com/2016/09/26/applovin-orient-hontai-capital/|website=Forbes|publisher=Forbes|accessdate=26 September 2016}} 13. ^{{cite web|url=https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/26/applovin-is-selling-a-majority-stake-to-orient-hontai-capital-for-1-4b/|title=AppLovin is Selling a Majority Stake to Orient Hontai Capital for $1.4B|publisher=TechCrunch|first=Anthony |last=Ha |date=26 September 2016|access-date=16 October 2016}} 14. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.reuters.com/article/us-applovin-m-a-kkr/kkr-agrees-to-buy-stake-in-applovin-at-2-billion-valuation-idUSKBN1K62W5|title=KKR agrees to buy stake in AppLovin at $2 billion valuation|author=Joshua Franklin|publisher=Reuters|accessdate=18 January 2019}} 15. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/businesswire/press_releases/California/2018/08/21/20180821005240|title=AppLovin Refinances Hontai Capital’s Convertible Note Facility|author=|publisher=San Francisco Business Times|accessdate=18 January 2019}} 16. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.pocketgamer.biz/interview/68689/why-applovin-is-getting-into-the-mobile-publishing-game/|title=Why AppLovin is getting into the mobile publishing game with Lion Studios|publisher=Pocket Gamer|author=Craig Chapple|accessdate=19 January 2019}} 17. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2018-07-12-applovin-launches-publishing-division-lion-studios|title=AppLovin launches publishing division Lion Studios|publisher=GamesIndustry|author=Rebekah Valentine|accessdate=19 January 2019}} 18. ^{{cite web|url=https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/us/Documents/technology-media-telecommunications/us-tmt-2016-fast-500-winners-by-rank.pdf|title=2016 Winners by rank|publisher=Deloitte|accessdate=23 September 2017}} 2 : Companies based in Palo Alto, California|American companies established in 2012 |
