Career and deathArmand Castelmary was a member of the Paris Opera from 1863 to 1870, where he created the three significant roles in the French grand operas listed above.[2] He was married (later divorced) to the soprano Marie Sass, who created the role of Élisabeth in Verdi's Don Carlos.[3] He made his debut at the Royal Opera House, London, in 1889 and sang there in many subsequent seasons.[1] Castelmary toured the United States with several different opera companies in 1870, 1879 and 1890 and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1893.[1] He died onstage at the Metropolitan Opera in New York during a performance of Flotow's Martha. The audience, not realising he was suffering a heart attack, thought his physical collapse was a stroke of fine acting and rewarded him with a loud ovation as the curtain was lowered.[4] Notes1. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Armand Castelmary|url=http://www.operascotland.org/person/6364/Armand+Castelmary|website=Opera Scotland|accessdate=1 September 2016}} {{Portal bar|Biography|Opera}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Castelmary, Armand}}2. ^{{cite web|last=Forbes|first=Elizabeth|authorlink=Elizabeth Forbes (musicologist)|title=Armand Castelmary|url=http://oxfordindex.oup.com/view/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.O008606|website=Grove Music Online|accessdate=1 September 2016}} 3. ^{{cite book|last1=Letellier|first1=Robert|title=The Diaries of Giacomo Meyerbeer: The last years, 1857–1864|date=2004|publisher=Fairleigh Dickinson University Pres|isbn=978-1611471854}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=Death on Opera Stage|url=https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1897/02/11/100419271.pdf|accessdate=1 September 2016|work=The New York Times|date=11 February 1897}} 8 : Operatic basses|1834 births|1897 deaths|People from Toulouse|French opera singers|19th-century opera singers|19th-century French singers|19th-century male singers |
