释义 |
Arshad Ali is a British psychologist, political activist and politician who was leader of the Respect Party from November 2012 until December 2012, when he was forced to resign after evidence of a prior conviction for election fraud came to light. Ali was a longstanding Respect campaigner, having contested council elections in Bradford's Manningham ward in 2007 and in the general election in 2010. He tried and failed to win Bradford West,[1] the constituency taken by George Galloway in 2012 in a landslide victory. Ali's election as Chair-elect of the Respect Party was announced by Respect Party national secretary Chris Chilvers on 5 November 2012.[2][3] Ali stood down as national chair in December 2012 after it emerged he had a spent conviction for electoral fraud.[2] In 1997, Ali was in jail for six weeks following his conviction for electoral fraud.[4] Later, he stood for election to a City Council seat as a Respect Party candidate in Bradford in 2014.[5] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/election2010/results/constituency/a60.stm|title=BBC News - Election 2010 - Constituency - Bradford West|publisher=|accessdate=3 November 2016}} {{s-start}}{{s-ppo}}{{s-bef|before=Salma Yaqoob}}{{s-ttl2. ^1 {{cite news|last1=Pidd|first1=Helen|title=Respect party loses second leader in three months|url=https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2012/dec/07/respect-party-loses-second-leader|accessdate=16 December 2015|publisher=The Guardian|date=7 December 2012}} 3. ^{{cite news|last1=Czernik|first1=An|title=Terror law fears may rouse voters in West Yorkshire police chief poll|url=https://www.theguardian.com/uk/the-northerner/2012/nov/13/bradford-respect-party-george-galloway-police-and-crime-commissioners-election|accessdate=16 December 2015|publisher=The Guardian|date=13 November 2012}} 4. ^{{cite news|last1=Armstrong|first1=Claire|title="Bradford Respect candidate should face election ban"|url=http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/11201421._Bradford_Respect_candidate_should_face_election_ban_/|accessdate=16 December 2015|publisher=Telegraph & Argus|date=9 May 2014}} 5. ^{{cite news|last1=Armstrong|title=Candidates named for City Hall seats|url=http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/local/bradford/11173861.Candidates_named_for_City_Hall_seats/|accessdate=16 December 2015|publisher=Telegraph & Argus|date=26 April 2014}} |title=Leader of the Respect Party |years=2012 }}{{s-aft|after=George Galloway}}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Ali, Arshad}}{{UK-politician-stub}} 5 : Living people|Leaders of the Respect Party|21st-century British politicians|British politicians of Pakistani descent|Year of birth missing (living people) |
