{{BLP sources|date=April 2019}}Ashley Spires is a Canadian children's book author and illustrator. She paints all of her picture books and graphic novels by hand rather than starting with sketches and digitally coloring them, something editors say "sets her apart from the pack."[1] Her characters have been called "dapper and stylish."[1]

Biography

Spires was born and raised in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, where she studied photography at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, intending to pursue animation until she was led to illustration after taking a class on book making.[1]

Spires' first contract was with Lobster Press, where she illustrated Peter Kuitenbrouwer’s 2004 title, "Our Song: The Story of O Canada, the Canadian National Anthem." [2] Afterward she attended a postgraduate illustration program at Ontario’s Sheridan College, where she met Tara Walker (now the editorial director of Tundra Books), whom she would later collaborate with on the "Binky" the cat series. In addition to Lobster Press, she has written and/or illustrated books for Simply Read Books, Second Story Press, and Scholastic Canada.

Spires says she "fell in love with style at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design," which led to creation of a fashion blog called "Drawn Out Wardrobe," where she drew pictures of her fashions rather than photographing them.[1]

In October 2018, it was announced that her book "The Most Magnificent Thing" was being turned into a short animated film featuring the narration of Whoopi Goldberg[3].
