}}Ataur Rahman (born 18 June 1941)[1] is a Bangladeshi stage and television actor.[1] He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2001 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to drama.[1]

Early life and education

Rahman was born in Noakhali on 18 June 1941. Early life was spent in Maternal Grand Father's House in the district of Noakhali in the British India. School education and Matriculation (School Final) was completed from Chittagong Collegiate School. Intermediate Science was completed from Chittagong College, Chittagong. Completed  Master in Science (M.Sc) in 1964 from Dhaka University.

Career

Rahman served as the general secretary and later president of Bangladesh Centre of the International Theatre Institute (BCITI).[2][3] He is the founder general secretary of the theater troupe "Nagorik Natya Sampradaya".[4] He is a former chairman of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation.[4][5]

Rahman directed over 35 plays including "Roktokorobi", "Banglar Mati Banglar Jol", "Narigon", "Irsha", "Opekkhoman", and "Waiting for Godot".[4][6]

  • Directed about 35 original plays and translated foreign plays.
  • Recent direction 'Hamlet' by William Shakespeare translated by Syed Shamsul Haque.
  • As an actor, acted at least 2000 nights in various plays.
  • Writer and theatre critic : Published twelve books: Translation of European plays, Essays, Theatre Criticism, Book on art and culture, book of poem.
  • Honorary Fellow of Bangla Academy  
  • Post Graduate examiner and part-time teacher of three public Universities :  Rajshahi University, Jahangir Nagar University and Dhaka University
  • Television and cinema actor

  • “Loko Natyadal” Gold Medal for stage direction.

  • Kazi Mahbubullah lifetime award  and other prestigious awards by 10(ten) different organizations.
