Kposowa is an American sociologist and professor of sociology at the University of California, Riverside, where he is also the co-chair of the sociology department.[1] EducationKposowa received his B.A. from Saint Paul's College in Liberia in 1977, his M.A. from the University of Cincinnati in 1986, and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1990.[2] CareerKposowa became an assistant professor at Wayne State University in 1992, and remained there until 1995, when he became an associate professor at the University of California, Riverside.[2] ResearchKposowa is known for his research on suicide.[3][4] For example, his research has shown that divorced men are significantly more likely to commit suicide than their female counterparts,[5][6] and that Wednesday is the most common day for people to commit suicide.[7][8] Another study he published found that people who lived in conservative-leaning states and in states with higher gun ownership rates were more likely to commit suicide. The same study, published in 2013, found that people who lived in a state where a higher percent of the population attended church were less likely to commit suicide.[9][10][11] References1. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.sociology.ucr.edu/people/faculty/kposowa/index.html | title=Augustine Kposowa | publisher=University of California, Riverside | work=ucr.edu | accessdate=13 August 2016}} 2. ^1 {{cite web | url=http://faculty.ucr.edu/~kposowa/ajkvita.htm | title=Augustine Kposowa Curriculum Vitae | work=University of California, Riverside | accessdate=13 August 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.cbsnews.com/news/men-wear-divorce-badly/ | title=Men Wear Divorce Badly | work=CBS News | date=14 March 2000 | accessdate=13 August 2016 | author=Staff}} 4. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.apa.org/monitor/jan01/suicide.aspx | title=Suicide by profession: lots of confusion, inconclusive data | publisher=American Psychological Association | work=Monitor on Psychology | date=January 2001 | accessdate=13 August 2016 | author=Foxhall, K.}} 5. ^{{cite web | url=https://nypost.com/2000/03/15/divorced-guys-more-prone-to-suicide/ | title=Divorced Guys More Prone To Suicide | work=New York Post | date=15 March 2000 | accessdate=13 August 2016 | author=Geller, Andy}} 6. ^{{Cite web |url=https://vancouversun.com/health/Douglas+Todd+silent+epidemic+suicide+among/10830117/story.html |title=The silent epidemic of suicide among men |last=Todd |first=Douglas |website=Vancouver Sun |publication-date=25 February 2015}} 7. ^{{cite web | url=https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/wednesday-is-peak-suicide-day-study-finds/article582562/ | title=Wednesday is peak suicide day, study finds | work=The Globe and Mail | date=8 July 2009 | accessdate=13 August 2016 | author=Yang, Jennifer}} 8. ^{{cite web | url=http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Healthday/story?id=8033482&page=1 | title=Health Highlights: July 8, 2009 | work=ABC News | date=8 July 2009 | accessdate=12 May 2017}} 9. ^{{cite journal|last1=Kposowa|first1=Augustine J.|title=Association of suicide rates, gun ownership, conservatism and individual suicide risk|journal=Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology|date=28 February 2013|volume=48|issue=9|pages=1467–1479|doi=10.1007/s00127-013-0664-4}} 10. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.mediaite.com/online/political-conservatism-and-high-rates-of-gun-ownership-are-linked-to-greater-suicide-risk-study-says/ | title=Political Conservatism And High Rates Of Gun Ownership Are Linked To Greater Suicide Risk, Study Says | work=Mediaite | date=5 April 2013 | accessdate=19 October 2016 | author=Vamburkar, Meenal}} 11. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.ibtimes.com/study-links-church-membership-lower-suicide-risk-gun-ownership-conservative-ties-higher-risk-1174981 | title=Study Links Church Membership To Lower Suicide Risk, Gun Ownership And Conservative Ties To Higher Risk | work=International Business Times | date=5 April 2013 | accessdate=19 October 2016 | author=Mintz, Zoe}} External links
