The ACSC is hosted by the Australian Signals Directorate but based at the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation headquarters in the Ben Chifley Building. The Centre is led by the National Cyber Coordinator, overseen by the Cyber Security Operations Board, and is the joint responsibility of the Minister for Defence and the Minister for Home Affairs. The ASCS integrates the national security cyber capabilities across the Australian Signals Directorate cyber security mission, the Defence Intelligence Organisation strategic intelligence analysts, the Computer Emergency Response Team of the Department of Home Affairs, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation cyber investigations and telecommunication security specialists, Australian Federal Police cyber crime investigators, and Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission cyber crime threat intelligence specialists.[1] The Centre is also a hub for collaboration and information sharing with the private sector and critical infrastructure providers, state and territory governments, academia and international partners. The former Coordinator of the Australian Cyber Security Centre was the concurrent Deputy Director of the Australian Signals Directorate. In line with the recommendations of the 2017 Independent Review of the Australian Intelligence Community led by Michael L'Estrange and Stephen Merchant, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that the role of the Australian Cyber Security Centre would be strengthened and that the Prime Minister's Special Adviser on Cyber Security, Alastair MacGibbon, would assume the responsibilities as the Head of the Centre.[1][2][3] National Cyber CoordinatorThe National Cyber Coordinator (formerly the Special Adviser to the Prime Minister on Cyber Security within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet) of the Department of Home Affairs is responsible for national leadership on cyber security policy, coordination of priorities for Australian operational cyber security agencies, and the implementation of the Australian Government Cyber Security Strategy. The National Cyber Coordinator also ensures effective partnerships between Commonwealth, state and territory governments, the private sector, non-governmental organisations, the research community and the international partners. The National Cyber Coordinator also works closely with the Australian Cyber Security Centre and the Australian Ambassador for Cyber Issues.[4] Cyber Security Operations BoardThe Cyber Security Operations Board (CSOB) is a secretary and agency head-level body responsible for strategic oversight of the government’s operational cyber security capabilities and coordination of cyber security measures.
