The season featured 24 contestants divided into two tribes: "Champions", composed of twelve high-achievers who excelled in their fields, and "Contenders", composed of twelve everyday Australians. The season premiered on 1 August 2018[1], and concluded on 9 October 2018, where Shane Gould was named the winner over Sharn Coombes in a 5-4 vote, winning the grand prize of A$500,000 and title of Sole Survivor.

It is the third season to air on Network Ten and be hosted by Jonathan LaPaglia, and the first to be filmed on the Fijian island of Savusavu. It featured various celebrity contestants[2], as well as Russell Hantz, a three-time contestant on the American version.

Season summary

The 24 contestants were divided into two tribes. The Contenders, representing everyday Australians, faced off against the Champions, high achievers in their respective fields. After the first few Tribal Councils, alliances emerged on each tribes. The Champions tribe was controlled by a dominant alliance led by Mat R, with Lydia, Moana, Samuel, Sharn and Steve W, while Brian, Jackie, Monika and Shane were outsiders. The Contenders tribe, meanwhile, had a male alliance of Benji, Robbie, Steve K, and Zach with outsider Paige, and a female alliance of Anita, Fenella and Shonee, with Heath, Jenna and Tegan in the middle. When the Contenders lost another immunity challenge, the male alliance sought to take control of the tribe by aligning with Heath, Jenna and Tegan and eliminating Paige, but the swing voters deemed Steve K. too untrustworthy and worked with the women to eliminate him. Jenna and Moana were then voted out of their tribes due to injury and illness respectively.

With the tribes at nine apiece, the stronger Champions then utterly dominated in challenges. Benji saw this as an opportunity to take control of the Contenders, lying to the female alliance that Tegan was intending to betray them, and thereby aligning them with the male alliance to orchestrate Tegan’s elimination. Despite leaving the game, however, Tegan was sent to Exile Beach. Heath was targeted next, but he played a hidden immunity idol to save himself and Anita was voted out instead. Tegan and Anita then squared off in a challenge for a chance to return to the game, and Tegan emerged victorious and thus rejoined the Contenders. Despite Tegan being the clear target, Zach’s abrasive personality and misogynistic views became too much and he was eliminated, followed by Paige for being too unreliable. This left the Contenders in three close pairs: Benji and Robbie, Fenella and Shonee, and Heath and Tegan.

With 15 players left, a tribe swap occurred. Shonee and Tegan were sent to the Champions, while Lydia, Monika, and Sharn were sent to the Contenders. Benji and Robbie immediately aligned with the former Champions, with Shonee and Tegan attempted to align with the majority Champion alliance of Mat R, Samuel, Shane and Steve W. This initially worked, as Mat R. decided Jackie could not be trusted and sent her home, but despite Brian attempting to form an alliance with Shonee and Tegan plus Shane, Shane stuck with the Champions and targeted Tegan. Tegan was offered another reprieve, as the Contenders were given the chance to save her, but Benji and Robbie worked with the former Champions to send her out of the game for good. The new alliance then eliminated Tegan’s best friend Heath, leaving the tribes at six players each.

With 12 players left, a merge occurred. The eight Champions initially intended to stay united and eliminate the Contenders, starting with Fenella, but Mat R. and Shane became scared of Lydia’s strong challenge performance and blindsided her first, despite Samuel’s protests. Robbie then became the first member of the jury, followed by Samuel who was intending to turn on Mat R. At this point, Benji saw a chance to overthrow the dominant alliance, and worked with Fenella and Shonee, plus Champions outsiders Brian and Monika, to vote out Mat R. Sharn became the next target, but Brian and Monika decided to work once more with the Champions to vote out Benji instead, despite Shonee trying to save him with a “vote stealer” she bought at auction.

The pairs of Brian and Monika and Fenella and Shonee realigned, and voted out Steve W. They then again targeted Sharn, splitting the vote between her and Shane in case of an idol being played. Sharn did play an idol, but Brian’s paranoia and fear of Sharn led him to deviate from the plan and cause the elimination of Fenella. Shonee, hurt and angry from losing her best friend, decided to work with Shane and Sharn to vote out Brian. However, they decided to eliminate Monika first out of the realized fear that Brian might play an idol.

With four players left, Brian won a crucial immunity. Brian wanted to vote out Sharn, but Shonee, fearing that she would not beat Sharn in a fire-making contest and Shane would not turn on her closest ally, decided to try to turn Sharn against Shane instead. The plan failed, and Shane and Sharn stayed together to eliminate Shonee. Sharn then won final immunity, and stayed loyal to Shane by eliminating Brian, making Shane and Sharn the Final 2. Despite being the more strategically and physically dominant of the two, Sharn was criticized for being unlikeable and preaching loyalty despite playing both sides and failing to save her closest ally Mat R. Shane, however, despite being less aggressive, was commended for her grace, likeability, underdog status and work ethic despite her advanced age. She won the votes from the female jurors Fenella, Monika and Shonee, plus Mat R. and Brian to narrowly win the title of Sole Survivor.

| ShortSummary = The 12 champions of their field and 12 everyday Australians arrived on the island. There, they battled in their first challenge for tribal necessities.
  • Reward challenge: One castaway from each tribe will start at the top of a waterslide. When Jonathan LaPaglia says "go", he will pull a lever, where an object in a suspended net will zip line down to a sandpit at the bottom of the slide, and the castaways will then race down the slide into the sandpit. The person to get to their tribe's mat with the object in hand wins it for their tribe.
  • Immunity challenge: Ten castaways from each tribe will have to go over a 4-metre wall and down a cargo net. Once everyone is on top, they will then untie a battering ram, which they'll manoeuvre through a series of obstacles. They will then use the battering ram to smash through a stone wall to get the battering ram to the remaining two tribe members. From there, the runners will use keys to retrieve puzzle pieces inside the battering ram. Once the puzzle solvers complete the hanging puzzle, they will then use sandbags to knock down the pieces. The first tribe to knock down all of their pieces wins.
