The Authors Cricket Club is an amateur English cricket club founded in 1891 and revived most recently in 2012. A number of prominent British writers have been featured as players on the club team, the Authors XI.

1891-1912 team

The original Authors Cricket Club was an offshoot of the Authors Club, which had been founded in 1891 as a place for British authors to gather and talk.[1] Sherlock Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle, reputed to be an excellent cricketer, was an opening bowler. He was joined on the team by other authors including Winnie the Pooh creator A.A. Milne, who was the best fielder on the team, and Jeeves and Wooster author P.G. Wodehouse who was regarded as a decent player. Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie, however, was not, despite his great enthusiasm for the game. In 1887, Barrie had set up his own team, which he named the Allahakbarries, for others with similarly limited playing abilities. The Authors and the Allahakbarries existed side-by-side for a number of years, with Milne and Wodehouse joining Barrie in playing for both teams.

The original Authors XI played their last game in 1912. The team failed to re-band after World War I ended in 1918, as a number of the players found that their appetite for games had been diminished by the horrors of war.

2012-present team

The Authors Cricket Club has been reincarnated several times since the original team disbanded, with teams in the 1930s, 1950s and 1980s.[3][4] Alec Waugh and Edmund Blunden were both members of the 1950s team.

In 2012, 100 years after the original team last played, literary agent Charlie Campbell and journalist and novelist Nicholas Hogg announced they were re-forming the Authors XI. Among the writers who joined the team in the first season were novelists Sebastian Faulks, Richard Beard and Kamila Shamsie, historians Tom Holland, James Holland and Peter Frankopan, non-fiction writers Matthew Parker and William Fiennes, children's author Anthony McGowan, journalists Jonathan Wilson, Amol Rajan, Alex Preston, Jon Hotten, and Ed Smith (Smith is a former professional cricket player who played for England), comedian Andy Zaltzman and actor Dan Stevens, best known for his role on the television series Downton Abbey.[5]

Tom Holland, Matthew Parker and Nicholas Hogg bowl for the team, while Richard Beard and Anthony McGowan are opening batsmen. Charlie Campbell serves as captain.[6]

Team members collectively wrote a book about their first season, The Authors XI: A Season of English Cricket from Hackney to Hambledon (Bloomsbury, 2013), with each contributing a chapter about a particular game or aspect of the season.[7]

The Authors XI play against other amateur teams in England such as the Lords and Commons (made up of members of Parliament), the Actors (a team that includes Damian Lewis and Iain Glen), and the Eton College team, raising "tens of thousands of pounds" for charities including Chance to Shine, which encourages competitive cricket in state schools,[8] and the conservation group Alde and Ore Estuary Trust.[9]

In 2013, they defeated the national team of Japan, which was then ranked in the top 40 in the world, in London.[10]

In addition to games in England, the Authors XI have traveled to several foreign countries to play cricket. In 2013 and 2015, they traveled to India, where they played against the Rajasthan Royals as part of the 2013 Jaipur Literature Festival[11] [12] They toured Sri Lanka in 2014 and again in 2016.[13][14] In 2015, they played against the Vatican team in Rome[15], and in 2017, they traveled to Reykjavik and played against the Icelandic national team in a three-game match, losing 2-1[16] (but redeemed themselves the following year, defeating Iceland by 20 runs when the latter team came to England).[17]
